I'll probably be subtly editing this 20 times up until the deadline finally clocks out--
I'm not really one for contests but, damn, when I saw it was The Magicians, a series I'm pretty darn invested in, I had to give it a shot!
This is the most characters I've put in a single drawing in years! It's taken quite a while to work out this illustration.. but it felt good to focus on a single illustration for a long time.
When considering the theme of "celebrating the story up until now" I was like, how the hell do you do this for such a dense story. I finally settled on wanting to illustrate all of the main crew at (what I felt) were the peaks of their strength/magic, some good some bad, some whole and some.. not quite them.

I have a great big spoilery magic-nerd talk below the line, skip if you haven't seen the show but want to! Take a look if you're curious about all that's going on.

So, look, gotta start with Our Lady of the Trees, right? Julia really becomes such a light and hope for everyone and, really, after all she's suffered, to turn her healing into goddess-hood was just, SO GOOD. She's beautiful in the parasol scenes. Now going from left to right, Kady and Penny are strong on their own but their relationship is so lovely and they go to so much greater lengths when its for each other, pushing themselves to help each other or protect each other. I PERSONALLY DEMAND THEY BE TREATED BETTER if there's no Penny/Kady in S4 I'm going to explode. Alice is depicted in her niffin state; Eliot may not be himself but judging by this past season he's more magically dangerous than he's ever been. Yes, yes I will play with u. I've drawn him with a subtle god-killing bullet allusion since he was the one to release the terror in the first place. Margo, wonderful King Margo, is such a badass running an entire kingdom by herself and dealing with all the Fairy bs. She may be technically stronger with her new eye, but all her bloody sacrifice puts her as my top without any extra help. Twenty-three Beast Q... ugh.. I noticed Jason's brow is actually less tense when he's playing the Beast? I love that-- ya think too much with your shade I guess. And I actually had no idea Josh would become as big of a player as he is, but I'm glad he's there. Technically, he's depicted as a combination of his amazing musical number with Dick!Josh's jacket but I think he deserves it.

All that being said I tried to be interpretive with the keys too; trying to place them strategically not by who retrieved them but how they relate to the characters and story!
Again left to right: starting with the Truth key next to Kady and Penny since it's all they can use to see Penny (AND THEIR LOVE IS TRUE). The Abyss key is between Penny and Alice. Penny is trapped (lost? coming back) in the abyss of astal space.. but also with the Abyss key's power I felt related to the all-consuming nature of magic as a niffin, and niffin Alice seemed to become the anti!Alice/depression monster reflection.. thing. Between Alice and Eliot is the Vision key since the Vision key is what revealed the monster in the first place and now Alice is the only one who knows it's out there. The Unity key is in the center of everyone but also unifies Eliot and Margo because they belong together always........ Realm key for Margo since she has to deal with all that shit. Time key sits between Quentin (because he's 23 Q) and Josh since Josh gained so much from traveling to a different timeline. Finally the Illusion key, since Josh spent all that time chilling in the Unity key illusion!

Whew, okay, that's it. Gamble and McNamara, if you're reading this can you please tell Arjun and Hale I love them.......
