ThisΒ Tutorial Β is how I learned this technique and he explains it pretty well in there. Read step 2. Basically the water drops falling speed is too slow to break the surface tension of the water. When you see it in person, there are lots of drops that appear on the water. And I guess it isn't technically floating as much as it is skidding across the surface... they are VERY fast most of the time and it can be really hard to capture them! I don't know the science side of it, I just know it works and it's awesome and it's pretty

It would be hard to do without a DSLR and a macro lens. I tried to do it before I got the equipment I have now and it didn't work

My grandmas birthstone as well! I really like opals. When I first uploaded this I think I had named it blue drop. Then someone said opal and I was like oooh yeah it does look opal!!! lol
