In the comics Tony was more often than not drunk, but usually a result of depression after Pepper died.

Marvel and DC tell the heroes´s stories again and again, and every new version of the story has a different detail. For example, Jarvis is human in comics but he´s an AI computer in the movie. This is something I like about super heroes comics. I think that it´s what make them legends. =]
