Description

Avit (it/they), a robot created to guard the eternal sleep of beings from an advanced magitechnological civilization. They now exist as a collective being in their synthetic physical form with those they once guarded.

Personality
Avit itself, the original synthetic mind of the machine, is a rather quiet and gentle being, fascinated with and nearly reverent of all living things. They can get lost in sensations: the softness of a creature's fur, the sound of ocean waves on a shore, the wash of rain on their body.

That said, the "Avit" most others know is the collective that acts through the machine. The souls within them are not enough to have distinct personalities on their own, but some may hold a stronger influence at some point or another, and Avit still has the final say in actions made. Generally, as the collective, they are very curious about all sorts of things. They can be fierce or sorrowful, gentle or austere; they can be many things, but they are never violent or aggressive to others due to Avit's nature. One collective will shared among them all is a love for Avit, their protector and companion for eons before and eons after.

Story
Avit was created in an ancient age, for the purpose of guarding the eternal sleep of beings from an advanced magitechnological civilization. The Cairn, as the place they guarded was known, was the place those of significant magical power and status would rest - as their true deaths could upset the balance of magic in the civilization.

The civilization solved that particular issue with other means eventually, though those already within Cairns could not be revived or put to rest without significant risk. Ages passed, and eventually the Cairns were forgotten. During all this time, Avit guarded the location dutifully - but not without slowly developing the beginnings of sentience. They would find the beauty in the tiniest things of the lonely moon and the forgotten souls watched it in dreamlike states.

One day, the facility encountered a critical malfunction, leading to the true death of all in the facility. It was thought that the release of these souls would lead to magical chaos expanding much like an invisible explosion, but instead the souls were drawn to the developing sentient existence of Avit and subsequently absorbed into its magic matrix.

It was quite suddenly not alone in its mind. The souls merely had fragments of individuality and lacked independent will, but they were fragments of truly sentient beings and behaved in ways Avit could not predict. The souls could feel the budding sentience and encouraged it to leave and explore - they're all dead now, anyways, so its original purpose was moot.

So it left, wandering space with hundreds of souls keeping it company and cultivating its consciousness.

Eventually, they came across a device that could create a dimensional rift, and there it entered a new universe, one in which they encountered the starship-city Astrum. It had been a long time since they interacted with others, and considered the experience of exploring the peaceful city something wonderful, exhilarating.

They found a home in Astrum, joining the ship's expeditions to new planets, dimensions, and civilizations. Perhaps one day, they will return to their home dimension and see what has come of it.
