Not so much a specific type of hide as a specific type of tanning process. I use vegetable tanned cow hide. Veggie tanned is safe and non-toxic whereas something like Chrome could be dangerous for you! Most baren undyed hides are veggie tanned, though, so I think you're safe.

Good luck! It's a fun hobby and quite addictive! Once you make one mask, it's hard not to make more.

Thanks for this tutorial! I been looking for tutorials like this for bracelets and this is the most helpful one yet. Also, I am now addicted to AliveGems. There are no rockshops in my lonely corner of the Midwest, and I missed being able to actually see what I'm buying. Thanks twice over!

Glad I could help out on both counts! AliveGems is a fantastic shop. Another place you might find some good deals is a wholesale jewelry place called firemountaingems.com The shipping's a bit much, but mix and match bulk discounts is priceless!

When I get back from vacation I'll be uploading some masks to the LeatherMaskArt group. It may take me a while to experiment with cabs, but when I do I will surely share!

Very informative! I do something similar with my horns and eyes. I like your technique. I've been using goop but I think I'll give tanners leather cement a try.

I was kind of doubtful of the stuff because it looks AND smells exactly like Elmer's glue XD But once I waited a little while and did a tug test, this stuff bonds very permanently! It won't work on anything but leather-to-leather though.
