Description

The ship in a nutshell. I would like to think that's the reason why Ty Lee struck down Azula at the Boiling Rock.

I suddenly have a lot of work but I managed a rough sketch to get some feels out over the weekend.

This is a truly spectacular piece. The realism of how they look and how the clothing is presented is stunning. Their expressions and body language perfectly convey the emotion of that scene. Bravo!

Sorry, but Ty Lee can do better.  Much better.  Like, say... anyone who's not psychotic and tried to murder her brother?

*sigh* That's precisely why there's a small part of the fandom that ships it but knows it's difficult to resolve, and that's why we are sad about it. We recognize that a lot of self-development and maturity is required for them to actually "work" as a relationship. If Azula had a more normal upbringing, she and Ty Lee would archetypically be a good match, in my opinion. I myself hate abusive relationship dynamics, so I agree with Ty Lee hitting Azula at Boiling Rock. That means she's not taking Azula's cruelty anymore. And I believe that was an equalizing dynamic in the relationship. If you love someone, whether lover or friend, you should be able to call them out on their harmful behavior and help them become more balanced as individuals. That's why I'd like to think Ty Lee hit Azula for her own good, as well. (and of course to prevent her from killing Mai, too)

Ty Lee is also probably a bit masochistic to allow herself to get as close as she got to Azula and take enough of her cruelty without getting hurt. I think this is a tendency for certain "giving" and "feeling" type personalities (but Jungian Typology is another lengthy discussion, so I won't delve into details anymore). This is not hard to grasp if you know battered wife/gf psychology. That is the assumption I had in making this drawing. That Ty Lee is testing and hoping to get through the cracks in Azula's armor because she "sees" Azula underneath all the darkness. (Note that this explanation only works IF you are also on board the assumption that Azula's "badness" was nurtured and she's NOT inherently evil.) But again, I do not approve of the battered wife/gf/friend mentality, so I'm really glad Ty Lee did what she did at Boiling Rock. I would not ship them if Ty Lee did not show a semblance of independent-thinking.

Anyway it's a 2D cartoon; it seems silly to dimensionalize every character in complex detail, but good stories like the Avatar franchise just make us feel things as human beings. And that's why fans have the freedom to formulate plausible scenarios that are offshoots of canon. What I've outlined above is my most ideal and plausible scenario for them --that Azula is a product of horrible parenting and Fire Nation traditions. And through some post-war events, and a lot of difficulty, she CAN recover and be redeemed. All the Azula/Ty Lee fan art I do comes from that assumption. I would not expect everyone to agree but I think any "ship" or "headcanon" that is derived from a place of intelligent reasoning, human insight and EQ-based thinking is worth considering, even if one does not necessarily accept it. Taste after all is subjective and pointless to argue about

Btw, I also would not put those two together as they were before Boiling Rock. That's unhealthy for Ty Lee. I also haven't forgotten how Azula set her circus net on fire and unleashed all the dangerous animals on her. The point of my fan art is to show an emotion, not a conclusion --The emotion that Ty Lee can't help how she feels, and she sincerely wants to be a good friend to Azula. But she's also smart enough to draw the line in the end.

Is this a dream?

Beautiful, emotional, tragic love story.  Is that a shadow under Azula's eye or a tear?  I wish these two were canon in the comic book.
Tyzula has been the hardest ship for me to sail (write).  I get so frustrated with them.  Then just like you...  I get some feelings out writing them...
Thanks,  Awesome work.

That's just a shadow. I think Azula has repressed her emotions waaaay tooo deep to have a tear in her eye, at least for me. Then everything just burst after the last Agni Kai

I also wish they were canon.

Thanks for liking and sharing the feels :3

Thanks for the explanation.  And I agree with you about her emotions.
Azula just burst after the Agni Kai.  I cried with her when she burst into tears.
Would have liked to seen a scene (epilog) of her being carted to the 'Nuthouse' and Ty Lee (in Kyoshi Uniform) beside her... 'guarding her'

Yeah, no shit, that breakdown at the end was so sad! And I'm glad Bryke made it that way (with her crying) There's not enough time to flesh out her issues in the cartoon but her expressions at the end was a really subtle way of humanizing her that the viewer feels pity instead of hate.

I'm working on an exile scene, actually. Kyoshi warriors are just there as guards but it's mainly about Azula exiled in the Earth Kingdom, as inspired by a fic I read.

Yeah. no 13-14 should have gone through what she, mai and ty lee went through.
exile... cool.
