First Impressions: Wow I'm doing a critique on a DD Holy cow, am I crazy, they are gonna Kick -Ban me so fast..
Not seriously though..
First impressions: Your technique, your way of making light solid, even impenetrable is enigmatic. from the viewers eye to the figure and beyond we know there is no barrier; similarly we know we, even if our feet were on the same floor Ms.G just walked, our eye must follow her, we can not follow her.
Composition: a quick review of your Gallery shows me that you have a strong understanding of light and shadow and that your are not afraid of negative space in your photos, or your other work. I am a "Law of Thirds" believer, but your precise adherence to vertical thirds and horizontal fifths [for me] combines with the starkness to isolate your subject and draw the viewer back to her receding figure. ( I have a feeling I need to look through your work further to learn something more about her, since she has both de-materialized, and disappeared it two different works ) The vastness around her hearkens back to "Sacred use of Space" in building.
Questions: the figure is a bit ambiguous, I get that she is disappearing, but I am left with a few unresolved thoughts.
1, Where the head/neck comes to the body almost gives me the impression of the front of a dress with the head down facing us, with bits of hair breaking the shoulder line on either side..is she facing the viewer of moving away as the "motion" of the rest of the piece suggests?
2, Where her feet meet the floor there is another anomaly, there is a contour or visible artifact that seems to imply an aquatic like tail(fish or crustacean) or moth like wings which might blend better with one potential interpretation. the third mundane but weird explanation is the two small lines floor center of the figure show feet on tiptoes from the back.
Human Element: The impact and emotion are there this is a very nice piece of work and I admire the limited subset of your body of work that I have looked through. This is definitely in keeping with your vision and sense of beauty, while expressing a what I am reading as a sense of loss and finality. It seems to me you have a good bit of emotion tied up in this one. [I do not mean for my questions to detract from what you have done.]
Final thoughts: emotion, impact and a pleasing image.
in Mike's humble opinion

Random question: is the title a reference to Auden's poetry or not at all?
