Description
Walking through a misty night can show you your own future.--- --- --- --- --- ---
For Equestria Dailys Newbie Artist Training Grounds III, Day 26: "Draw a pony in or from the future/Draw a pony out of time"
Actually I had no idea what to draw. There were so much options I saw, but nothing I considered as "the" idea. I even tried a Bender-Pony (Futuramas Bender) and it was horrible. So this here came up last. Has way more potential and the background is not what I had in mind (although it is kind of ok) but there was simply not enough time left (again...). Guess I will draw this pony again in the future (oh that irony).
But hey, I like the idea. Maybe not that wrong to let Scootaloo see that she will be a great flyer one day.

Thank you very much! The lighting is always critical because it can look really awkwars when you mess up. Glad it worked here.

Which one of the Scootaloos do you refer to? And thank you very much once again. I begin to really like this rough way to draw and shade. Bought a new really black pencil today. This should help for drawings like this.

Shed some light on it, if you don't mind. I'd like to be illuminated.

Hm, I would like to do so, but I don't know what the special trick is or of there even is one.
I decide where the source of light shall be. Then I shade the far side of any objects or body parts pretty strong and the "not so far" side not so strong, creating a gradient. Sometimes I smear the edges with caution using a finger or don't do this step when I want the rough style. For the shadows on the ground it helps to think with lines (not portals this time) or to draw very thin lines from the source of light as the vanishing point. So you have an orientation for where the shadows must be. Then I draw them, a dark cone first, not so dark edges and more and more blurred and less dark the farther away from the object you are. See "Umbra" at Wikipedia for the parts of the shadow called umbra, penumbra and antumbra I try to create this way.
In the end it is a mixture of geometry, spatial sense and training. And a lot of the pencils lead. Hope this sheds at least some light on it.

In a nutshell: Draw shadows when there is no light. Search Wikipedia for "Umbra". Practice. Be enlightened.

But what about when I'm NOT in a nutshell? WHAT THEN???

Um, good question. I never tried to draw outside a nutshell, so I have no idea.

Thank you. I guess I will do more of this light and shadow. Not just because it is fun.

Thank you. Funnily enough the background was not planned that way but needed to be rough due to the lack of time. So the foggy effect was the best I could do to make it not look ugly.
