As medieval Man sought to describe the horrors of the unknown, birds in earth, fish in air.
He never specified the fish in question, nor quite how high up in the air.

The picture of the astronaut is Edward H. White the second first American astronaut to walk in space he died in the Apollo 1 fire.

With all respect for the dead, neither seems a particularly good way to go.

I'd interpret this as a metaphor for colonisation. How humanity has taken over and colonised the Earth, it moves to space to find new places to colonise. Only to find that they're not the only species that wish to colonise. The space jellies colonise the physical body. Diversity over time leads to competition and eventually unity.

What a beautiful piece!
The first thing that stood out to me was the common denominator between the elements of space and sea both being considered "the unknown".
The astronaut's one hand is holding on to the life-line, but it seems like he is letting it go, not really clutching it in a firm grip. (What is he holding in his other hand? It looks like a tiny space-station of sorts.)
Also the jelly fish have an aetherial quality to them that give me the association of the soul leaving the body. That there are three of them is interesting, but could be explained as being different parts or aspects of him.
So in short, my interpretation would be that it is about venturing out into what is unknown and mysterious. The clouds below covering up the world that is being left behind.

13PaVel In reply to formerselves [2018-11-17 10:07:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, your interpretation is very spot-on. I would also add the fact how humanity try to separate from nature while being a part of it. We think that man is a conqueror of all, but in reality we are very fragile and nature can eat us for lunch. Astronaut without his suit is just a floating dead body in outer space, small malfunction of a diver's equipment and we have the same story under water. We are more like a dust in such places.

Not the artist, but it looks to be a thruster. Before the EMU was developed astronauts carried a hand-held mobility unit during spacewalks - if I do not recall wrong it was regarded as rather hit or miss, as down on Earth there is little chance of practicing what is essentially propelling yourself with a spray can.

Very true. Us humans love dominating and controlling the natural world with our technological contraptions, but it is indeed a tenuous grip we have on it.
