I like Windows 7 a lot, definitely a lot more than I did vista. It doesn't hog up my system resources even with the aero effects enabled. (I like eye candy.) I'm also still able to play my favorite games (which is always a plus in my book.)
Ubuntu 9.10 is a Linux distribution, and it is their newest version. It offers a lot for new commers to Linux to learn Linux without having to worry too much about using the command prompts. If you want, you could always try it out. They offer what is called a live-cd where you can try it out without having to install it on your computer. (Everything is store in RAM, so it will probably be a little laggy.) I suggest downloading the ISO and then getting a copy of either virtual box (made by sun) or vmware server 2.0 to test it out without even having to burn it to a disk.
It is a good "beginner" distribution of Linux. I actually just switched to another distribution that Ubuntu is based upon, Debian, last night. (Personal and technical reasons that I will not get into here.)

mm, well i have heard of Debian! YAYA! i'd honestly enjoy getting into linux again (we had to make modifications to it in uni)... but unfortunately, so many things have higher priority right now. take care! JL
