Dunno I was just trying to diss you through Mephisto.
He used it to refer to himself! That he kept gazing into the abyss (the cases with criminals), and so the abyss gazed back at him (he was influenced by the criminals and warped into their world/level of psychopathy...in other words, he lost his mind and broke down)
