Glad to hear you're persistent. The good thing about the talent that you have is that there's no expiration date on it. I learned that after graduating college back in 1987. I thought I'd be able to get a job as an illustrator pretty quickly, but it still hasn't happened. Instead, I've been working as a commercial artist all this time, with a sideline as an exterminator on nights and weekends since 1996. While both are very gratifying, because the commercial artist job enables me to indulge my creative side and the exterminator job enables me to meet a whole host of terrific and interesting people, it ultimately isn't what I want to do. THIS stuff is what I want to do, but so far, no luck. However, with the completion of these three paintings, I finally feel confident enough to make a PDF of my work, burn it on to CDs and start sending it out to book and magazine publishers and get a positive response. I have little choice, as my day job is probably going to be ending this year and I don't want to do exterminating full-time. It's a great side job and all, but it's not who I am. THIS is who I am. The only advice I can offer is to keep up with current technology. I don't know how it is there in the UK, but here in NYC, the commercial job market is such that employers want you to know the entire CS suite, the whole Office suite and web design thrown in for good measure and expect to pay you $30K a year, which is great...if you don't want to either eat or pay rent. I'm not a kid anymore. I need more than that to survive (hence the 2nd job.) If my CDs don't work, I'm going to look into art teaching and failing that, it looks like I'll be my exterminating boss' 4PM-to-midnight man. Either way, I'm not giving up and all I can do it persist, and I hope you do the same. Cheers!
