oh my...... your gallery is AMAZING. woah.
so how close do you have to get to these beasties? Or do you photograhp spiders in cages, or what? I wanted to do a series of spider/bug paintings (I love painting bugs! ^^) but I am way to scared to get close enough to take good shots. what is your secret.

SupaidaSaru In reply to SaraSchool [2008-11-10 04:06:30 +0000 UTC]

uhm... some are in boxes some are not (older images have acrylic between the camera and the spider... the Black widows, Orb weevers and Jumping spiders and other wild ones were all done with no enclosure. the Tarantula Hawk was in a box, because he could fly pretty well. the Moth images were without. tho for everything in the future I will be trying to photograph without anything between the lens and the subject!
and as for how close... I do 1x sometimes requiring a focusing distance of 24cm (film plane to subject), and I really like to work around 3-10x and sometimes requiring me to be a 1-10 cm from a subject.

Love your gallery. I get pretty creeped out by spiders up close and personal (although I avoid hurting them or killing them - accidents happen occasionally when I get startled) so I really like looking through your gallery and getting to see them so well. Your shots are amazing and help to remind me why spiders are so cool.

Very nice gallery. I love spiders too and managed to work under Dr Raven here in Australia for a while studying phlogiellus. Haven't done much since. Am looking at getting out now i've got my new camera to do some more spider studies. Look forward to seeing more from you.

Wonderful spider shots. I've never actually kept any, except in the haphazard sort of way of naming the ones that live in my bathroom. They're beautiful creatures and it's nice to see some proper close ups. It's quite inspiring.

Very nice series of photos on the Tarantula Hawk. Ours around here appear to be jet black with orange, almost red wings. And they are freakin' HUGE.

Recently on TV I saw an Iraq War Veteran who had some HUGE tan colored spiders he called "Camel Spiders"!!!
He said they are in the desert...the two he had were locked in combat with each other...he said they always fight each other and the locals bet on them, sort of like Cockfights or Dogfights!!!
Do you know anything about them and if so could you please steer me to where I could learn more about them???
The Vet said they are vicious, fearless and very aggressive...and like I said, they are huge...look even bigger than those big Tarantulas found in the Amazon Jungle!!!!

Did I ever answer this?? I don't remember ever doing so...

either way...

Camel spiders are actually not all that dangerous Viscous maybe... and quick... definately. they have Huge appetites, and are difficult to keep in captivity.

The name camel spider actually comes from a myth... "they kill and eat camels"... actually when a camel dies in the desert from anything at all, the carcass attracts TONS of scavenging insects... the increased population of insects of course attracts insectivores. including lizards, scorpions, spiders and of-course, camel spiders.
camel spiders will eat anything including lizards scorpions, and other arachnids, including the same species.

They are from a small family of arachnids called solifugids, sometimes called wind scorpions. they are not actually in the spider family. they are most closely related to Scorpions and vinigeroons.

They are very Quick and aggressive (only to their prey). they eat insects, scorpions, spiders and other arachnids, or anything they can take over... because of their agility, strength and speed they can often overpower many things twice their own size. they are non venomous, (contrary to popular belief) some species get pretty big compared to most arachnids, they get as large as 6 inches in the Middle east, but no larger (including Iraq). much of the camel spider info is myth.

we have some of em here in the US too... tho ours don't get much larger than 2 inches.

and actually they are never quite as large as some tarantulas... most Lasiodora sp. and Theraphosa sp. (both genera are tarantulas) are far bigger. Tarantulas are often considered the largest family of spider (tho are not true spiders), they are however the largest family of arachnids including any creature with 4 legs or more. adult female Theraphosa blondi (the largest of all arachnids) can get as large as 12 and 13 inches in legspan.

Oh ho man! Yes! We have spitting spiders all over here. I tried photographing one (I think it might be in my scraps) but... I am not photographer and my camera is good, but not that good. EXCELLENT SHOTS! Now... see if you can toss a wingless fly in and catch it in action - spitting.

Hey! Picked up an A. versicolor sling and a B. emilia sling. They are so freaking adorable. I'll start taking pics right away, but they are not in their new homes yet (which ship on Monday).

Tuishimi [2007-08-04 06:39:27 +0000 UTC]

Your pictures convinced me... I am getting a versicolor. Sling/Juv for .5" for $24. What do you think?

That's a small spider. Will it be able to take small/pinhead crickets?

Very excited. Oh, bought materials to build my first tarantula enclosure. If I manage to do a half decent job, I will be building a few more.
