I'm sorry. D:
I don't go on dA much, the community is annoying as hell.

What kinds of communities on dA do you mix with? It sounds like you just watch the weaboos, noobs, furries (unsexualised) and anime/Japanese obsessed otakus on here just to observe their behaviour. There is a more sophisticated and understanding community on here than that. And not everyone on dA is like that, not everyone on dA is out there to steal your art. The way you talk to me about dA makes it seem like that, when really you're just mixing and observing the wrong types of people.
Facebook is like that too, with different sorts of people. There are people who are very open and put every detail about themselves online and there are those who are incredibly private with maximum security. Please, before you generalise get to know the community .

Just my opinion and attitudes are subjective since there are no such things as absolutes. What one may find charming another may find repulsive but here we go...
Abridged ver. - [link]
Long ver. -
It's not the overall community (The majority does though) that sucks or anything or the overall talent on there, it's the fact that this site is horribly designed. What's worse than "furfags" and Sonic re-colourings is a big website with huge flaws that will never be looked into by the admins.
Let's start off with the privacy settings. I really don't know what they were thinking with these decisions here. Users are not able to remove comments on their journals or deviations except by removing the whole thing. That really is a bad thing when they can't allow you to entirely remove unwanted comments and pretend they never existed but rather have a bunch of "Hidden by Owner" comments clogging up space. MANY sites allow you delete any unwanted comments on your blog, userpage or whatever but not deviantART. Any sane person would rather have their comments removed than to be marked as hidden. Not only that but it takes more RAM for such an action and BBC text takes a lot longer to load up than simple HTML.
Not only can you not delete comments but there is no option to disable comments from being sent to your profile or journal entries. It's possible to disable comments from your deviations, however but not the other two and what if you're a well known user on the site and/or one of Encyclopedia Dramatica's victims (whether it's right or wrong for ED to attack these individuals is another story), wouldn't you want to give yourself some defence on your page to reduce the hassle? It's like deviantART hardly care if their users are harassed. Maybe they do care but really, is there any harm in implementing BETTER privacy settings for extra security?
Yes, there is a block list you can use to get rid of any pests but is it enough? Not really, any troublemaker can just make a new account and bypass the blocking. Sure, that can happen on any site BUT WAIT, there's more. They have a fucking block limit! Why any site would have a limitation on how many people you can block is beyond me. A popular user and/or a victim of ED would need to block lots of people causing havoc on their profile. Sure, they can remove banned accounts to shorten the block list but why even have a limitation on how many people you can block in the first place?
Just have a look at almost every other site with common sense. They'll let you delete any unwanted comments on your blogs or whatever, they'll let you disable comments on them as well and none of them will have a block limitation (Newgrounds state they have a block limit for PMs but I've tested it and I'm able to block more than 100). Makes you wonder what's wrong with the heads of this sad excuse of a website. They must think you shouldn't keep your houses secured at night and only take action when a burglar breaks into your house. Really makes me wonder what kind of logic they follow.
Is terrible privacy settings the only bad thing about this site? No, deviantART are also pathetic money whores. Just looking at the subscription features and the amount of advertising for this horrible waste of money, half of the features should be available for non-subscribers. They insist on making users subscribe to them just to be able to browse more deviants on a single page. That's right, they want you to PAY to be able to view more artworks per page! How despicable is that?!
More features for subscription include critique (a special page for real criticism because comments weren't good enough...Don't ask how that works), creating journal polls and "access the Archives with wayback". Wait, you mean this? I'm able to view their archived pages without even having an account on there so what on earth are they thinking?
To be fair, there are some reasonable features for subscription such as recent viewers and beta testing...But that's about it. The rest are either little extras which you can easily live without or utterly ridiculous shit like viewing more artworks in one page which should be free to EVERYONE! £3.23 for a month subscription is definitely not worth it! You could get so much better stuff with that money such as a monthly subscription with Last.fm. They have the reasonable features as stated earlier and you get better site performance as well as extras to their radio stations.
There's been some rumours going around that subscribers are given lighter punishments for offences they make just because they gave the site money. How sickening is that? It wouldn't be a surprise if this was actually true considering how the whole site is run and if there's such bias, the fuckers need to realise no-one should be above the law, not even people paying for your services.
One thing that's always bugged me about deviantART is their god awful categorising. They are WAAAAAY too specific on the different categories they have. Most of the shit they have there can easily be tags. Does there have to be individual categories for stock images of food, objects, nature, etc? No, this shit can easily be simplified with the types of artwork people are seeking for. They created a fucking maze for the artists. There's not even a simple search for a specific category. All that can be said to them is: "KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID!"
It's not just categorising that's awkward, uploading submissions can also be a pain. Several times when I tried to upload stuff, I had problems just because it had dimensions the site didn't agree with for retarded reasons or it claimed I didn't have a preview picture for a .swf file which I clearly did choose. I had troubles uploading banners with uploading 770 x 100 px dimensions on there...Did they even test this site before releasing it?
More deviantfail...

Hmm, you put up some very reasonable arguments about dA. I've read the Abridged version and the 'deviantfail'.
All I can say is, why where these people breaking the rules in the first place? .
I can relate to you with the .swf files, I did have several previews, all on different formats and dA still wouldn't accept it! In the end I just gave up.
Now that you mention it, privacy settings are quite poor here on dA. I don't want to remove any comments really just hide them for privacy reasons, I don't have any problems with people on dA but I do like the chats between myself and the person to be kept to ourselves.

I feel as though dA does a lot of things for their own benefit or to gain profit, they don't care about their users anymore.

Back in the past they did. I still remember all the cool stuff they used to do.
All sites want to gain the favor of the users when they first start out but over time, money becomes their main priority.
Besides...this website is commercial, you can even tell from the domain name...

Oh, what did they use to do?
Mmm, money does corrupt people so...its one of the main reasons I hate money so much.

They used to listen to their users and were more understanding. There was also a "quality control" but it was later removed due to controversy...since quality is subjective...

A lot can happen in three years, such a shame. I've gone through your entire favourite's gallery, you have similar things in there as I do, exclude the anime and Panty and Stocking stuff. Are you disappointed over this matter?

Yes...
Plus it's sad because the majority of dA would fav anything Naruto, Bleach etc.

Well, I don't think fanart is bad so to speak, some people do fan art in fear of having original art/ideas stolen. As long as the fan art is well done and original (style, humour, concept, etc.) it's okay. However, MSPaint stuffs -_-

Cherruyue In reply to The-Laughing-Lunatic [2010-12-21 22:27:29 +0000 UTC]
I don't have a problem with fanart, what annoys me is that almost 95% of dA is fanart and the website in general is nearly always specifically used for looking up well...fanart.
It used to be a place where art majors would show of their unique pieces. Now it's overrun by Pocky scoffing weeaboos who'd jerk it off to hentai. I know this isn't all of dA but the majority sure seems like it.
...and some of it will always make it to the frontpage.
Haha, the MSPaint stuff.
