EPIC HUG TIME

Send one to all your friends who you think deserve a hug (which, hopefully includes the person who sent it to you)!!

You might send it to your enemies as well!
It'll really make them stop and think!!!

If you don't receive this back, nobody likes you, and they wish you'd stop bugging them!

If you receive this back 1 time, open up! Find more friends, enemies, or enemies pretending to be friends

If you receive this back 2 times, you're off to a good start! (Unless you sent it to yourself! That's cheating!)

If you receive this back 3 times, you're a good friend.

If you receive this back 4 times, you're truly loved as a friend!!

Forgot to mention, despite having so many animals, there's so many more I'd love to experience owning. I'd like to try and own a capybara, a skunk, raccoon, coatimundi, kinkajou, a lemur if they are keepable as pets, and a Binturong. I'm mostly interested in exotic pets, though. They're such a delight to have~ I know raccoons and skunks are fairly exotic, but I know the others listed are on the deeper end of exotic.

Zahzumafoo In reply to Sandcharm [2010-05-18 18:18:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh, totally. There are a million animals I'd love to keep- many not necessarily as pets, but... just to experience and study and whatnot!

As far as lemurs being kept as pets- that's really just... not feasible. I can provide you with a full list of goods and bads, if you truly are trying to consider it, but... really, as much as I adore lemurs with all my heart, I know that they just aren't pet material. xD; The best way to work with lemurs is.. just working/volunteering at a zoo.

I haven't worked with many of the others first-hand, but... I've heard that Kinkajous tend to get really violent once they mature, and Binturongs are just SO rare (in the pet trade, especially- but they're still really rare in zoos, and endangered in the wild!) that seeing or working with one at all is pretty unlikely!
Really, when you get into the deeper scale of exotic, the animals just get more and more dangerous and more and more unfriendly. xD They don't want to be pet and cuddled like you'd think they would, they just want their food and then they'll bite you until you go away, haha! One of the sad facts of working with such rare animals, I guess!

Sandcharm In reply to Zahzumafoo [2010-05-19 03:28:16 +0000 UTC]

Well I actually did plan on moving to Cincinnati once I save enough money and working at the zoo there. Anywho, I'm not seriously considering lemurs, but I just adore Binturongs more than any of the others listed~ Only reason I had a pet interested in them is because there's supposedly a tribe or some sort that keeps them as pets, but ya, they are extremely rare. It's a shame.

Anyways, at first glance, I wasn't too interested in Kinkajous, I thought they were ugly. :l ... But they're just one of those things were if ya stare long enough, they look kinda cute... But I have heard some rather violent stories on their part.

I did seriously consider a Capybara at one point, still am, honestly, same for the Coatimundis. It's just one, I've got so many pets at the moment. Two, this isn't my house. And three, I don't have the space for any more pets. I live in my... medium.. sized room in my parents' home, living with my glider, my dog, my 3 reptiles, and the 2 ferrets. They all live with me in my room. The only pets of mine outside of my room are the cats, for obvious reasons besides space issues. If I had a full scale house, sure, I'd add on, but I don't and won't for a looooong time. :l

Ya know, for a while I wanted a Pangolin. xD But their scales are really sharp and plus, I think they can only be imported from Africa and I think that's illegal to import an animal from a foreign country. I dunno. :l ... Plus there's the issue of how would I go about supplying it with the large amounts of dirt for digging and ants for eating without putting it outside. 'Cause ya know, outside it's easy for it to escape.

Zahzumafoo In reply to Sandcharm [2010-05-19 05:14:56 +0000 UTC]

.... There is a tribe that keeps Bintus as pets? Like, a native tribe in their home range or something? If such is the case, that's not much of a case-maker. Lots of native people keep animals of their area. Kids in Madagascar will catch lemurs and keep them as pets, for example. But the animals are still plenty wild and aggressive, and the people surely have plenty of bite scars-- thing is, people living like that are pretty used to bites and other such scrapes just from living in the rough, so it's not as big of a deal to them!

I actually had no interest in Kinkajous, either, until I worked with a baby some time ago. It was ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE, and their tails are really fascinating. After that, I could definitely see the appeal- as babies, they're just the sweetest things ever and you definitely form a quick bond. I was only around him for one day, but I still cried when I left!
That being said, though- it's another case where your best bet would be to work at a zoo, perhaps in the nursery department. Helping to raise any orphaned/pulled babies until they can go on exhibit and such! But, in a pet setting, they'd just lose that fun once they hit maturity, and that's the point where a lot of people just abandon their animal.A horrible situation for the animal to have to go through, and the very reason why I say working at a zoo is better than trying to risk the unknown in getting a 'pet' animal!

I'd actually never heard of pet capys until Iheard of a lady on the news who had one, haha! I've only encountered naturally-enclosed, 'wild' Capybaras, and-... they weren't very friendly animals at all, haha. Coatis I had even less interaction with, but I know some of the other keepers I was around had been bitten numerous times. These were more of zoo-type animals, though- I haven't a clue as to either of their 'pet' compatibility! Do your research before going into it, I'd say! (:
And haha, yeaaaaah... All these animals are some of the really space-demanding ones! Binturongs are massive, all the Procyonids (raccoons, kinks, coatis, etc.) are climbers so they need a big space, lemurs need an even bigger space because they leap more than they purely climb, and... Capys can get to be like 150 lbs., plus they're semi-aquatic, so I'm sure you'll need a pretty good sized setup for them, too. All in all, most of these animals would need a cage space at least the size of a small room- notably larger, for the lemurs and binturongs- so keeping them in your patenrs' already pet-crowded house is probably not the best of ideas. If you do endeavor into exotics, you'll pretty much have to have your own space, otherwise everyone's going to be squabbling for adequate room, haha!

On the case of importing- if you see a Binturong for sale, there is an incredibly high chance it was imported or from directly-imported bloodlines, which is absolutely illegal! Pangolins, as far as I know, aren't imported at all as pets. They seem to be incredibly rare in captivity, but they face a massive threat from hunting to sell their meat to China. Crazy, but true! But there are very, very few zoos that actually have them- I don't even know half a dozen of them! They're just way too rare, and for some reason they can't get their dietary and husbandry needs quite right in captivity. So, nope, can't say there's any chance of finding the others as a pet. If you did ever come across one, you can bet it'd be completely illegal, but that sure would be a once-in-a-lifetime sort of find!

I thought China were making the scales of the Pangolin into medicine while the local Africans ate the meat as a delicacy... Anywho, I've -always- done my research before running into something. I absolutely hate people that do the opposite, it makes me sad to think how many iguanas and sugargliders have been abandoned. Iguanas because owners don't realize how huge they can get, not to mention aggression, and sugargliders because people only see the cuteness and don't realize how much love and attention they need on a daily basis. And additionally, both of these animals require a diet of mass variety. You can't just feed them the same thing every day like you could with a hamster or ferret. I only know the iguana jig 'cause I used to own one. She, atleast I think it was a she, whipped me quite a bit, but that's ok. I'm used to pain.

But ya, that tribe is a local one. Honestly, I don't care too much about wounds. I know sugar gliders don't draw blood, normally, but my mother has a friend at work that owns one, and it has a very bad attitude. Drew blood. It didn't bother me, but it's more of shock value. I grew up gettin' scars all the time as a kid from my cats. My arms have a plethora of scars. Plus I've been bitten by my Pitbull quite a bit, which does hurt.. But I make no real reaction over it. I know she's playing so I just grin and bear it and continue on. I know she was trained not to bite, but I don't want to ruin her fun by exclaiming,"No!" or "Bad, don't do that!" 'Cause she'll get the message and sit in her corner with her tail between her legs and her head drooped down while starin' at me. Injuries don't really bother me, I mean hell, I got my fingers slammed in a car door once and just stood there with my fingers stuck in the door. I waited until my parents were done talking and then asked if one of them would unlock the door for me and open it. They opened it, I removed my fingers, I went on with no complaints.
The only time I've had a reaction from pain is when I tripped over a large branch that fell during an ice storm.. Ya, it sounds stupid, but it caused a bruise that occupied the front of my entire lower leg. I reacted because it was the bone that really frikkin hurt, not the flesh. And even then, my reaction was delayed by about 10 or so minutes. I started to get irritable and snappy, that was my reaction. I calmed down after a while, though. In the end, it healed after 3 or so months, but my skin is still discolored in the area it occupied. I think I might of got a bone bruise.

Anywho, the other thing that kinda resparked my interest in kinkajous, was this: [link] : Ya, I know, Loris and Kinkajou, completely different things, but it was mainly the hands. It's just so cute, and the resemblance to a human's hand just intrigued me so much besides the fact that it was so unique in itself.

Anyhow, completely same thing with the Capys! I saw the article and I was like,"... What? You can keep those as pets?" So I spent hours watching videos of Caplin.. Rous?.. Anyhow, and I thought,"Ohhh that's soo cute!" Then I moved on to research, was really amazed to find out that they could sleep underwater if they truly felt like it, though with their noses above water. Turns out there's a capybara ranch that supplies babies year-round. I decided if I truly wanted to persue it, I'd need 1 - 2 acres minimum and bales of hay. Oh, and a pool ofcourse.

I didn't plan on going for any of these thoughts within the next few years. As I said, too little space and it's not even my house. I, myself, even feel a little crowded... but that's because I'm in this little room. I'm sure that feeling will go away once I've got an apartment and can distribute certain pets to certain rooms as I please to even it out. Though, I'd love to be in one space with them because I just adore them all so much and love to watch them when they're not on me, but that's not fair to them, and I'd just feel crowded again. Anyhow, when I get an apartment, I still probably won't get anything else until I get a actual house. I may not even move into an apartment if it has a Pitbull restriction or a pet limit. Let's see.. I'll be taking... Potentially 9 or 10 animals with me when I move. It's the cats I'm iffy on. I'll for sure be taking my calico, Jinna. She's been my lifelong friend, almost. I've had her since I was around 6 or 7, she should be with her mother in her elderly years. Sable is my black cat that I'm the most iffy on. She favors my mother and she generally has a bitchy attitude and bullies Jinna around. I don't know, one minute she'll be bathing Jinna and then the next second she'll smack Jinna and run for it. I won't be taking my Russian Blue, Genevieve... I love her to death, she loves me, and she's the most affectionate thing in the world, but I'd hate to seperate her from her sister, who doesn't belong to me. I'll still visit her, ofcourse, though. We'll have to see how Abigail turns out. She's the youngest, a kitten that was born on April 23rd last month. She's so cute~

By the way, I did see a Binturong up for sale on some website. It was listed in some foreign currency, which I forgot, but it was marked as 30,000 in whatever currency. If only it were a different time, somewhere in the future where I was better off financial and space wise, I woulda gone for it after researching needs, etc.

Ha, no prob. I was goin' through my old accounts' favs and saw that and though,"It'd be awesome to have a lemur as a pet..." xD

Anywho, thankies~ And thankies sooo muches for the watch <3

Ya, I do got a million pets. The past few weeks I've been on a reptile craze, got myself some geckos and got a bearded dragon about a foot long this weekend. His owner didn't have enough time for him, so I took him in as my own. I've bought a total of 3 geckos in the past month, but in one of my deviations it tells how one of them got killed thanks to the ferrets. At any rate, in our home we've got 12 cats(6 of them are kittens), 4 dogs, 2 geckos, 2 ferrets, 1 bearded dragon, and the sugar glider.~ I don't know a single person who couldn't dig a suggie xD They're so loving~
