Here's a cool idea for Starbound... Creature mounts but someone told me it wouldn't work and too much of hassle to create. I still think it would be pretty cool to have a creature to ride on while exploring the planets and I know there's vehicle mount but that can get old for some people.

I also think the robot horse thing is a cool creature mount.

I no longer work on Starbound and haven't for 5 years now. It isn't my problem.

However, I plan on having mounts in my current game I'm working on, Outworlder, which is similar.

Rhopunzel In reply to Pitool [2016-03-02 05:39:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Waz was a reference to the "Wassup!" advertisements Budweiser made in the early 2000s. They'd yell "Wazzup" at eachother and waz was a shortened version of that I used. Pretty simple and dumb.

As you can tell from my avatar, I'm also helping to mod Starbound. As a professional pixel artist, may I ask for any good tips that could help improve my work and how to overcome my colorblindness?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhopunzel In reply to BusterBuizel [2014-01-23 00:02:07 +0000 UTC]

I can't help with colorblindness, but...

- Don't be afraid to closely examine other people's work to see how they did things. You can either save a lot of time, or waste dozens of hours figuring it out yourself from scratch. One teaches you a thing quickly, the other gives you bragging rights and wastes a ton of time you could have used to learn more things.
- Set yourself small goals you know are within your range. Nothing burns out an artist quicker than working towards an insurmountable target. Sometimes the validation of reaching a goal is enough to spur you on to bigger ones, and if you keep it going you can go on to achieve great things.
- (Possibly the most important one) Good artists deliver. Learn to know when you've spent long enough on a thing. In my experience, if 100% is "perfect", the last 10% of something takes 10x longer than the first 90% did. Know when to realise you're spending too much time on something and making yourself a liability. Most non professional artists are inclined to think that anything beyond a 99% is unacceptable - that might be fine if you're a hobbyist, but when you're being depended on to deliver things on a schedule, it won't cut it.

Those are the biggest ones I can think of off the top of my head right now, good luck!

Hey Rhopunzel! Love all your work for Starbound. I'm the one behind the Argonian Race mod and trying to keep the style consistent with yours has been fun and has taught me a lot about pixel art. What are your thoughts on all the different mods coming about and what are your feelings towards The Elder Scrolls?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhopunzel In reply to SabbothO [2014-01-12 19:33:27 +0000 UTC]

Hi! Glad you like my work!

I think it's awesome so many people have been able to make so many mods so quickly, it's nice seeing how creative people can be with what we've given them. It's far exceeded what any of us were expecting.

Elder Scrolls...no strong opinion either way. I liked Skyrim and wasted about 100 hours playing it...ironically I really don't play games that often.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SabbothO In reply to Rhopunzel [2014-01-13 14:10:26 +0000 UTC]

Dang, 100 hours for someone that doesn't play games often!

I really think it's cool how much you all at chucklefish talk with your fans and customers, I was able to talk to Tiy, Molly, and Noxy from Multiplay a little bit when they came to visit my itty bitty server back before Christmas. That was really really cool!

By the way, from someone who works for a developer, what sort of advice or tip could you give to someone like me that hopes to start small as a graphics or concept artist with an indie developer? I frequent Quakecon here in Dallas Texas and have made friends with small time devs, one who now just recently got their game onto Steam, and even talked to some devs from Bethesda. But other than being able to say hi to them on a regular basis, I don't know where to go from there. I'd like to hear from someone who's already in the business and field I'm looking at and learning what sort of things lead them to those opportunities.

If you don't mind me asking, that is!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhopunzel In reply to SabbothO [2014-01-14 03:34:04 +0000 UTC]

No problem! It's strange because I don't really think of myself as ~a dev~ so it's weird when people ask me for advice.

The advice I'll give you may seem unorthodox - if you want to get into the industry, know that a developer/client will generally judge you in this order: Are they nice, Would they be easy to work with, How good are they. Don't quote me on that but from my experience that's been the case. Practice, but know that being good is only one third of it and the other two are just as if not more important. A lot of artists just think that being ~the best~ is enough, but from what I've seen that isn't the case. Nobody wants to work with someone who's an asshole or isn't easy to work with, and nine times out of ten employers will choose someone who isn't AS good as another, but are easier to work with. Cultivate your social skills, network but don't make it obvious you just want an opportunity - people can easily tell when someone's socialising to be nice and when they just want something. Be bold, but not desperate.

It sounds stupid but really what it comes down to is make friends, not contacts. If you make friends they'll look out for you and tell you about opportunities. A good word from a friend in the industry is a huge boost. If you have that and present yourself as an easygoing, manageable worker, it'll boost your chances tenfold.

Good luck with your career!

SabbothO In reply to Rhopunzel [2014-01-14 08:26:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the advice, I'm glad that you replied. It's almost a relief to hear that it's not just skill that matters, I worry a lot about whether or not I'm "good enough" and that makes me really intimidated by people. Like you, for example, just knowing that you're with a developer and trying to talk to you was intimidating even if you might not see yourself that way. I do try to be nice and easy to work with as much as I can not for opportunity but because I like to and I think it's a good thing to do, but when it comes down to it, I mostly get scared. The guy I mentioned who got his game on Steam is the dev behind that game Wrack, and I really wanted to do some art for him even for free just to get my foot in the door but I got scared. That ship has sailed but I should probably talk to him more. Also practice, school, work, and a long distance relationship has kept me pretty busy.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice, and good luck with your future work at Chucklefish! I really hope to get another chance to talk to you, Molly, Tiy, and the rest of the gang again in the future. I'm pretty sure you have all been the easiest and most pleasant people "in the business" to talk to, probably ever!
