You're very welcome -- I've done some Civil War-themed poetry in my time, and I think poetry in general might get short shrift on DA, so I'm happy to encourage where I can.

I am indeed! This picture from my gallery is actually me: mosby1865.deviantart.com/art/C…
Do you have a certain historical period you prefer to reenact? The pics in your gallery have quite a lot of variety!

I'm actually a Vivandiere with a Civil War unit. I love to study the Civil War. I was a female soldier. However I have done some pirate reenactments. I love history all together so I like to make costumes to go with all different eras.

Sweet!
I'm with the First Maryland Infantry (U.S.), based out of Baltimore, MD. We've been running ragged with all of the sesquicentennial events, but I wouldn't miss any of it! I assume your unit has also been doing a lot these last few years?
We'll have to see what happens in the hobby after this April...

Yes, they have. They've been to Shiloh, Gettysburg, and will be going to Appomattox when it occurs. We've also done some of the smaller sesquicentennial events such as Honey Springs, Oklahoma and Prairie Grove, Arkansas. We're the 77th Pennsylvania based out of Oklahoma. One of our original members who started the group had a relative who was in the original 77th unit.

Excellent. I've heard good things about the reenactors and reenactments in the Midwest, but have had little chance to experience them directly. The Western Theater battlefields (to say nothing of the Trans-Mississippi) are still on my bucket list as well. Always pleased to see the "77th" numeral -- the only semi-direct Civil War ancestor of my own that I've tracked down was in the 77th Ohio. That unit was one of the first to bear the brunt of Johnston's surprise at Shiloh, guarded a prison at Alton Illinois, and was captured wholesale at the Battle of Marks' Mills, AR.
My unit will be doing living history at the Appomattox National Park this April; I would expect there may be some sort of reenactment event which is not on federal park land, as well. Do you know which event the 77th PA will be involved in? It would be cool to meet some of your members!

I'm honestly not sure which one we are going to attend. We have our muster in January to decide on the events we will be attending. Sadly our group is small, but we are trying to recruit more members. I wish I could attend but I won't be able to get off work long enough to travel there.
We think that my family had a member that served in the war, but we cannot locate him on any of the rosters. I hope to do more research over my break.

Makes sense -- our unit does the same thing at the beginning of each year. We, too, are small -- I think one thing a lot of people are expecting in the next few years is consolidation of small units as the older folks continue to "retire." Best of luck in your unit's recruiting!
I have done a fair bit of Civil War ancestor research searching; I'm sure you've tried a lot of the same sources I have, but just in case there's any you haven't...
- The NPS Soldiers & Sailors System is searchable online, and is often a good place to start, and helpfully cross-references most unit histories. Like any large database, it's not without its errors/foibles, but it's nice to have a search engine dedicated to this subject.
- Many (though not all, I think) of the state adjutants general published rosters of all the troops from their state who fought in the war; many of these are available in full on Google Books or Archive.org now (and again, are especially useful because they are searchable). These sometimes are not as complete as they claim to be, and leave out some soldiers, but can be helpful. In the same vein are regional or county histories published between about 1870 and 1920, which sometimes describe the military exploits of units/individuals from their locale.
- FamilySearch.org, a genealogy site, has some searchable databases hosted on their site, and often links to rosters for Civil War units when you look up the unit on FamilySearch. I also have used FamilySearch's database of U.S. Census records between 1840 and 1940, which are available for free online.
- Other genealogy sites, like the state Gen Web sites (example: okgenweb.org for Oklahoma), are usually organized by county; if you have good residence information for your ancestor before or after the Civil War, it might be worth looking up the appropriate locality. The amount of information on these sites is uneven, since it's entirely a volunteer effort, but you might find something useful -- these sites almost always have a "Military" subpage for soldiers from the county in question.
- Fold3.com has a lot of military records, including Compiled Service Records for Civil War soldiers, and their search engine is robust. These are usually scans of original documents. Unfortunately Fold3 now requires a paid subscription for access to a lot of these things, and I know I've not yet reached the point of forking over money to them. However, you can register with them for free, and then you'll get updates about when they have periodic "free access" times for particular records. For instance, the latter half of last April was a "free access to Civil War records" period; I don't know if they'll do that every year, but I always pounce on the free periods when the subject is one I'm interested in.
- Ditto for Ancestry.com.
- There are a number of websites which aggregate Civil War soldiers' gravesites (such as the Sons of Union Veterans site, here: www.suvcwdb.org/home/search.ph… , and are usually searchable. Sometimes these sites are organized by state -- and when that's the case, the records are usually grouped by the state the soldier was buried in, not necessarily the state they hailed from. I've seen some errors on these sites -- no source is perfect -- but it's one other avenue to follow.
- Find-A-Grave.com can also be quite useful; I've found more than one extended family member's page on Find A Grave and wound up becoming the record manager for it.
- Resources are much sparser on naval records, but they do exist; do you have any reason to expect your ancestor might have served on shipboard?
- There are often other resources dedicated to soldiers from a specific state, if you know (or have a good guess about) the state the soldiers would have served from, there could be state-specific resources to help you. Some state archives have online search engines that help you find Civil War soldiers who served from that state or lived there after the war (the latter were often assessed for veterans' pension purposes). The Ark-ives.com site, for Arkansas, is a good example of the type.

Thanks for the information. I do have a familysearch account and it has helped some. I've traced my ancestry back to Charlemagne and Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius'. Maybe over the Christmas break I can do some more research.
I sure hope that our group doesn't have to join up with others, don't get me wrong the other groups I've met are nice, but our group is very much like a family. Things will work out right in the end, I'm sure. Once again thanks for the information.

No prob -- but sounds like you're way ahead of the game anyway! It's amazing that you've traced your ancestry back that far, and that you have such esteemed forebears
I know what you mean -- it's certainly possible to appreciate other groups without wanting one's own group dynamic to change. I hope yours gets to maintain its cohesion and identity; if you get a bit of new blood every now and then, I'm sure it can happen.
