If you love poetry, I recommend Philis Wheatly's "On Imagination"; I happened upon her statue on Commonwealth Ave in Boston and was entranced by the quote on the granite block. I think she's under appreciated as the first African American to publish in America.

That was a lovely poem! She seems to have a gift for word choice. I especially liked the lines, "But I reluctant leave the pleasing views,
Which Fancy dresses to delight the Muse;
Winter austere forbids me to aspire,
And northern tempests damp the rising fire". 
Well one suggestion warrants another! I very recently have taken a shining to A. E. Housman's poetry. Though they're more "simple" poems and lack the elegant loquaciousness of Ms. Weatley's poetry, the topics breeched (I personally) find attractive and very well handled! I like A Shorpshire Lad and Loveliest of Trees, to start!

I believe the exact words from the poem "On Imagination" were:
"From star to star the mental optics rove,
Measure the skies, and range the realms above.
There in one view we grasp the mighty whole,
Or with new worlds amaze th' unbounded soul."
I write an edit a Science fiction magazine and this quote completely stopped me in my tracks as we look for an interesting sci-fi based quote for the covers. The beauty of a smart phone is you can look up things up on the spot.
Funny thing, in my day job I spotted a painting sectioned into a grid with faces of people in the squares and liked some of what the artist did with it. I've become inspired to assemble a list of unsung black historical figures and do something much the same. Philis Wheatley and Bass Reeves are at the top of that list but this project probably wont fire off till late in 2013 or early 2014.
An I will take that suggestion to check out Housman. Thank you.

You write for a science fiction magazine? How fascinating! (Star Trek pun intended.) When I was younger I absolutely adored the cosmos and Heinlein and all those other sci-fi books. I bought myself a telescope when I was 8 and used to sneak out of the house at night to go out and look at the stars. Astronaut was totally at the top of my career choices during my childhood!
Hmm, sounds like a very interesting project! Hope it goes well and ends up looking fantastic!
