Hey! How have you been? Sorry that I haven't been on dA for a while. Last I remember, you were tackling quite a few intimidatingly long animes. How's that going?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

MajorasWaker In reply to AlatusAquae [2014-04-13 22:13:38 +0000 UTC]

Though it is nice that I can now make my own legal decisions, it does indeed come with responsibilities. And yep, I still ignore many of them too.
Driving is a lot of fun, and it's really nice that I can drive to sports training myself. Are you learning to drive as well? From what I've read, you can drive under supervision as you're 16, and solo when you turn 17. You do have to learn a lot in classrooms though! That's very different from here, where you just get a textbook, and then make a test when you're ready for it.

Yeah, plus that with such long series it can get predictable not only where the story is going, but also how the characters will react to it. Even with short animes I'm afraid I can't remember all their names, but after a few episodes I can mostly remember them. And like you mentioned, it's nice to have a full grasp at the story. Though sometimes, the really confusing endings can be the most fun (once you understand them).

It is indeed a nice site since it also gives proper links to sequels, prequels, and the original manga. Which is especially useful if you don't know at which season of a series to start. The ranking I use is just based on how much I enjoyed that particular series, and not so much as on quality. As for my music, I dislike the idea of rating them as well. Not only because you would have to adjust the rating after some time (if you don't like the song as much as you used to) but also because I have way to many songs. I have a incredible messy collection, the songs are in folders everywhere, and some of them aren't even properly named. So no, giving all your songs a rating is not really something for me, haha.

Great to hear that! Wonderful that everyone was so positive and gave their feedback. It must have been a lot of work for you to prepare all of this!
And good to hear the person in charge was satisfied as well, of course.         Yeah, imagine people not doing what there asked. *school group projects, I'm looking at you*

Ooh, skiing! That sounds terrific. I've always loved the snow more than the summer, and though I've never skied we always go ice skating with my parents and sister.
You could have some of my motivation, if I had any left...

And would you look at that, it's been a month since you wrote that. We could exchange handwritten letters, and it would still be faster.

AlatusAquae In reply to MajorasWaker [2014-05-25 05:30:39 +0000 UTC]

heh, about time I replied to this message. Whoops. You're right, the handwritten letters would be faster...except you have to factor in the procrastination time between me getting the letter and sending a new one out. XD

Here's how getting a license in the states works (as far as I remember) You can start driver's training at 14 and 9 months, which means that you can drive with adult supervision. There's two parts of driver's training, and you have to pass a written test at the end of them, as well as log 50 hours of driving with an adult. Then at 16 you can take the road test and if you pass you have a license with a curfew. At 17 you can get a license without restrictions. But If you're 18 and don't yet have a license, you don't need to take driver's training class. You just need to pass a written and road test. That makes less sense to me the more I think about it. You still need to know all the info they teach in the class, and you don't all of a sudden know it all once you turn 18... But I don't know much about the after 18 route, cause I got my license when I was 16. (I'm 21 now) Maybe the test is harder to really make sure you know everything? I remember the written test being ridiculously easy.

Oh, I love confusing endings! A couple of my favorite anime endings are from Madoka Magica and Dangan Ronpa. Actually, I don't know if either of those were confusing as much as had excellent plot twists. Or maybe I just have high standards as to what I consider "confusing" after watching Doctor Who. Either way, those are a couple of my favorite shows if you're ever looking for something else to check out, if you haven't seen them already

Haha, we were taking about snow and skiing, and now it's summer and I'm by the beach. My bad. The snow is fun, but the warm weather makes for a nice change after a long winter. Though I could do without the sunburn on my back...

MajorasWaker In reply to AlatusAquae [2014-06-28 21:53:11 +0000 UTC]

Yep, same would go for me. Or it would get buried under other papers XD
Still, would you care to give it a try someday?

The ages are a bit odd indeed, as is the part were you can just take the test after you're 18. The only reason they reduced the minimum age at which you could start taking lessons (you have to take them from a certified instructor) from 18 to 16 and a half is so people'd already have more experience when they'd drive on their own. If you start at 16,5 you can do exams when you turn 17, but only drive with your certified supervision (you have to fill out a form with the people who want to be you supervisor). The theory is that when you are 18 and can drive on your own, you already would have much more experience. They only started that program as a test 3 or 4 years ago, so it was early enough for me to join. But then I took so many lessons I was already 18 by the time I took the final exam. But indeed, it would make sense to make the written test a bit harder if you're taking it when your 18.
The test's here are not that easy I think, I really had to study for them. First there's a theoretical test with 25 questions about dangerous situations, and how you'd react. You have 8 seconds to choose an answer, and have to have at least 13 questions right. Then there's another part about rules, signs, and things like right of the way, which consists of 40 questions. Again there's the time limit, and you have to have at least 35 questions right (that's were I failed the first time, I had one too many wrong). Only when you passed this exam you can do the final practical exam, which consist of 30-45 minutes driving in various situations, like highway, city, parking, etc. (failed the first time here as well, I had a complete blank out and try to run a red light at a busy intersection. Let me tell you, I was incredibly happy that the exterminator have a brake pedal as well)

So do I, open or confusing endings can be really great because they leave you wondering about the serie for a long time. But there's also the part of uncertainty which sometimes is annoying, like they did in Elfenlied. They sort of implied that Lucy died in the gunfire, but then there are these things that make you wonder? I still like to think she lived on, but it's really open to what you make of it.
PMMM was already high on my to-watch list, and Dangan Ronpa is now added as well, thanks! I'd recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion as far as confusing endings go, but seeing you wrote how 'A Cruel Angel's Thesis' was one of your favourite songs, so I'm guessing you already saw that one.
NGE had a pretty confusing end, I'm still planning to watch the movies and try to get some clarification. SnK did have a pretty open ending too, now that I'm thinking about it. Like why turned Annie's father her into a titan (same goes for Eren, but okay they sort of explained that his father used him as a guinea pig).
Oh, I also watched 'Ghost in the Shell' recently, which is also a very interesting and diverse anime movie, though with a more defined end.

Agreed, the warmer weather does make for a nice change. However, in summer it also tends to be very humid quickly, due to the sea climate and all. And besides that, there wasn't really any winter to speak of here, it only went below zero for a week at max, and we didn't even get any snow. Which sucked a bit, because I wanted to build a snowman (or more specifically, a snow totoro).
Ouch, sunburns aren't nice. Not as bad as normal burns most of the time, but still... nasty.

AlatusAquae In reply to MajorasWaker [2014-07-12 00:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha, sure, why not? I haven’t sent an actual letter in forever. Though, we should probably wait until September to start, so I’ll be living at one place for longer than a month and then your letters would actually have a chance to reach me. XD

Your written driving test sounds a far more useful than our written test.  The whole timed thing especially sounds like a really good practical thing to have. That’ll do a much better job of making sure people really do know how to drive. I remember that our written test was stupidly easy (“what force are you fighting when you go up a hill?” (not to mention knowledge of gravity isn’t really the most important thing you need to know if you’re about to crash into another car)) And some of the ways they mark the road test are pretty stupid too. For the parking section, I was able to maneuver into the spot just fine, but somehow I couldn’t exit without knocking down half the cones. But I passed, cause they only judged if I could enter the space, so it didn’t matter if I totaled an imaginary adjacent car on my way out. Oh wow, running a red light on a road test does not sound like a good way to go!

Evangelion. Omg Evangelion. That show had the issue of being too confusing and not explaining anything in a satisfactory manner. At the end of twenty six episodes, I had no idea what the angels were, where they came from, or why they kept attacking people. And seeing as the angels were the main threat and that 90% of the show was fighting angels, I feel like that’s all basic information that I should be aware of. After I was done, I went and asked a friend to explain pretty much the entire show, and everything he told me was very interesting (terribly messed up, but interesting) but I swear that nothing he said was ever directly explained in the show itself. If I cared to rewatch it, I’m sure that everything would make much more sense, but I feel like it’s the show’s job to explain important details like what the Evas really are and why 14 year olds are the only ones who can pilot them. Or who SEETLE is and why they wanted to turn everyone into giant orange blobs of goo. It’s like if FMA decided not to explain The Law of Equivalent Exchange, or if Death Note didn’t explain what the Death Note did. That’s essential information to understand what’s going on. You can’t just leave that out.

Also, I had no idea what they were trying to do with any of their symbolism. I am a Christian, so I would pick up on all of the Christian symbols they kept throwing at me, but I was never able to connect the symbol’s meaning to what’s going on in the show. And I just looked up a quote by the assistant director that confirmed: “There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool.” Um, no, you can’t do that.

Idk. I wasn’t so much of a fan of Evangelion, if you couldn’t tell. like it was all very Fruedian and I really could do without themes of everything is about sex. Really. And….this is turning into a massive rant hating on the show and I’m going to stop now. This already went on far longer than I was intending. Whoops. Hope I didn’t offend you if you liked it. My friend did say that it was one of the first animes that successfully had intricate storylines and characters who plotted within plots with complex motives. I can appreciate that it was a breakthrough for future shows. And the opening song is one of my favorites.

Oh yeah, there is that Attack on Titan ending. But the story is still going for that one, so naturally there would be quite a lot of questions left unanswered. I assume from one of your tumblr posts a while back (Why is Zuko hiding under the counter?) that you have not been keeping up with the manga? I think waiting a month between reading chapters is killing my reading comprehension, cause by the time I get the next chapter I’ve forgotten a large chunk of what happened previously. But there are some really fun things coming up yet!

Ghost in the Shell. I feel like I’ve heard about/looked up that one somewhat recently. I’ll have to give it a try sometime!

Ooh! A snow Totoro sounds awesome! That’s too bad you didn’t get a chance to build him. Next year, hopefully! My friends and I once built a snow dalek in the middle of the Law Quad. The best part about that is later that week we met another Whovian, who told us that we needed to see something, then pulled out his phone and showed us a picture of the snow dalek that we had made!

Well I was planning on saying that would be a great plan, because then I'd have time left to try and improve my handwriting. But look at the date, in a few days and your message is written 2 months ago... It's a new record! That being said, I haven't really thought of anything to write yet? Most of our conversations start from a reaction to something, so now I really have to think of something to write about...

Perhaps it is, I guess. The government makes a lot of effort to keep the roads really, really safe for everyone (excessive street lighting, strict rules about alchohol, heavy fines on almost everything, etc.). It's of course very good that they do this, but luckily when you do make a small mistake (like one of your car's lights being broken) police officers often give you a warning first, or give you the change to try and replace the lightbulb, instead of fining you straight away. Then again, it's quite annoying that it varies from officer to officer, some of them can be real nitpickers.

Oh wow, if the rest of the test had the same kind of questions, you might be able to pass it without even studying! And while the knowledge and understanding of gravity is essential to calculate how the car reacts to various manoeuvres, it's the last thing you need when you're actually in a critical situation. Some older car theory books mention things like 'pumping braking' in case of an emergency stop to avoid the wheels locking and the car going out of control. But since almost all cars on the road have anti-locking systems, they don't learn you anything like that any more, just brake as hard as you can in case of emergency.
I would've mentioned that that was the one and only time I've (almost) run a redlight, but yeah... you probably remember what happened when I drove last time. So that makes two red lights.

Reading all of that (don't worry, I don't mind the rant. It's nothing insulting, just your opinion, something contrary to popular belief on the internet everyone is allowed to have ), I'd have to agree on the part of the story. It did have a very confusing story, even if I try my hardest now the only thing I can come up with are memorable scenes, and nothing about a substantial story. It was just really weird, not only like with the angels you mentioned, but also with people like Ayanami Rei. I still don't understand what it all was with her. But the angels indeed much more of a issue, since their pretty much the thing the entire story revolves around. And then when there were flashback episodes, the told you practically nothing, and just more felt like fillers than real effort to explain things. And then some of the symbolism made -sort of- sense at first, but then something else happened and you wouldn't know what it was about any more. Like how the first angel was defeated, it exploded in a cross-shaped flame, and I was like 'oh okay so since their angels they [the show's creators] made them leaving a cross-shaped flame when they die. Perhaps not the greatest idea, but I can see why they'd do that.' But then later on another angel was defeated and it just vanished or something.
I'm going to end it here as well, frankly it's a bit exhausting to think heavily about vague show. The last thing I'd want to say, is that while the story wasn't great in the end, it did a neat job of making you want the next episode, because who knows perhaps they explain something then. The whole show didn't really feel like watching a story to me either, it was more like seeing vaguely related video fragments of some weird, distant, parallel world. Alright that was really enough for know.

No! I did in fact not know that the story for SnK was still being written. (Hahaha, good thing that you remember my tags, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to recall what you were talking about) It's only logical that the manga is a bit further than the anime, but I'd never considered the possibility that the series would stop before finishing the whole story arc. So that's actually good, that gives me something more to read!

About Ghost in the Shell, it has some of the same things from Evangelion, mainly like leaving some things open to intepretation, and having a open ending. But the major story elements are quite solidly explained, so hopefully it's more bearable to you then Evangelion.

Haha, that's a fun encounter! Did he recognize you by your scarf?

Hey! I'm great, thanks for asking, that's really sweet of you! No problem, I haven't been much on dA either for the past months.
Mostly because I've been somewhat busy with school and similar things (I actually turned eighteen, the age were you are considered an adult here in the Netherlands, so there was a bunch of stuff that I had to arrange like insurances and whatnot ). But on the other hand I also got my driving license, so that's pretty neat. As for the animes, I was probaly watching either Fairy tail or Naruto/One Piece? Fairy Tail is going reasonable, I stopped a while around E100, but just recently continued. Naruto and One Piece were both dropped, I couldn't get into the story as easily, and the long length scared me a bit to be honest. It seems like my attention doesn't last much longer than ~100 episodes, so I've been watching more short series instead. Incidentally, I just finished Clannad: After Story today.
And I've watched a lot of movies that were absolutely wonderful, like "5cm per second" or "Kiki's delivery service" for instant. Oh yeah, Shingeki no Kyojin was finished as well (though the ending left me with plenty of questions). Well, if you're interested you can see for yourself which anime I've watched . Along with plenty more that I eventually hope to watch.

But really, enough now from me! How are you doing? I saw the journal about your art show, how was that?

AlatusAquae In reply to MajorasWaker [2014-03-13 18:46:24 +0000 UTC]

Congratulations on becoming an adult! Do you feel more mature now? Personally, I still have a habit of ignoring all responsibilities. But being able to drive is super useful and I bet that's nice to have now

Haha, that's the same problem I have with Natuto and One Piece. They're far too long for me to try to get into, and way too many characters for me to keep track of. I know I'm going to forget major details that are going to be super important later, and I'll just be overall really lost on everything. I like knowing that I have a full grasp on what's going on.

That's a really helpful website to make a list of everything on! Maybe I should make an account of my own...though, I really dislike ranking things. I refuse to give any stars to any songs on my ipod and just leave them all unstarred.

My art show was great, thanks for asking! Everyone was super positive about it and I got a lot of really nice feedback. And the person in charge was super happy too, because I guess artists have a tendency to not do everything the way they're supposed to and forget a bunch of stuff (imagine that) so she was pleased that I got everything done as asked and then some

Also, I recently got back from Spring break, where my family went skiing in Colorado. It was really fun, and nice to have a week off of school. Though, now it's really difficult to find any motivation now...
