I have been working on my value scales as you recommended,..
Β Β ...but I am afraid I still don't know how to critically assess my progress.
Could you give me a few pointers?
I know you have more important things to do than helping some random novice,

It's definetly going on the right way, I can see the improvements.Β
Now it's all about practice and understanding how the light, composition, anatomy and all work together.Β
I highly recommend "Schoolism", an online school with multiple courses with industry professionals and masters.
I subscribed for a year last month (the learn at your pace option), and you have access to all the courses and you can switch course when you want, you even have the assignements and have access to the corrections of other students.

I'll let you browse and if you have the money I recommend it, you should start with the fundamentals courses first to get a good grasp and not geting lost and do the assignements.Β
Then as I said, it is all about practice, there's not much more I can do.

I'm specialised in characters and creatures but I can do illustrations with detailed background/environments if needed. I don't have exemples on my portfolio but I painted environments in the past. It's not more difficult than characters and both are enjoyable to paint.
