Hello fellow deviant, your art is really amazing
Do you have any digital painting advice for a beginner artist like myself?Β

Hi, thanks! Simple advice would be to study people who are better than you. Keep looking at tutorials online rather than trying to figure it all out by yourself and of course keep practicing.

You creations are incredible Josh, hoping to get as good as you some day! I'm only just starting out in Digital Art and I wondered if you could you give me any tips or guidelines maybe? I'm pretty good at visualising what I want to make but I have a hard to getting that across on the screen, it never comes out in the detail that I want. Thanks! Β
Also I wanna say the detail and the lighting in "A Spirit Living a Human Life" is insanely good!

Hi, thanks for contacting me.
It might help if I could see some of your work that you're producing and then I could maybe give you more bespoke advice.
As a general way to improve, you should begin by studying 'masters' of painting. Here is a big list of them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Mastβ¦
A good exercise is to take many pieces of their work, shrink them down to thumbnail size, change half of them to black and white, and leave the other in full colour. Then make very rough thumbnail copies (studies) of them all. For the black and white ones, try to stick to around 4 shades of grey (never use 100% black or white). Doing these studies will help you with composition, values and colour. If it is details you struggle with most, use reference. Look up pictures of what you're trying to draw/paint and use pieces of different pictures in your painting.
I hope that helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I've not actually made anything yet, but i'll definitely try out the old master's suggestion. Oh and cheers for the reply! I always look forward to seeing some of your newest work, it helps to kick-start my imagination. Β

Your YouTube videos are looking really great, although it has made me a little curious as to how you create part of your paintings. When you add photographs as the base template layer (on top of which you add your own details) do you just add them in and erase the parts you don't want or do you put them as a different layer mode or something? I haven't seen that technique before yet it looks like a really effective way of creating a detailed painting more efficiently.
Great work man

Thanks for contacting me. I use them in a bit of a sloppy way to be honest. In that video I applied some photos, adjusted the brightness to match my current image, then tried to get the colours to work. In the end I usually end up painting over most of the photos so that it all looks cohesive. The amount that I paint over photos depends on how well the photos match my idea, atmosphere and colour choices. Certain layer modes work really well i.e. darken, lighten, soft light, but I try my best to stick with normal mode and adjust colours and brightness to match my image. Thanks

Oh that's awesome, it's a really intriguing way of doing things. I think I'll have to experiment with it a bit myself.
Do you ever use a photo without editing it much or at all?

JoshHutchinson In reply to TylerHinde [2014-12-07 08:05:05 +0000 UTC]
Nah, I usually have to do at least a slight brightness adjustment to get it to work.

Wow! Just saw your work via Reddit and I can only say it is just amazing!Β
Your art is very inspirational!
I'm sure you have been asked this before, but where do you get your reference pictures? Do you simply search through google images or have you found a better website for photos? Β
Thanks for your time!
