Very pleasant, thanks. I took a guided tour of Chichester Cathedral for part of it. The guide told us about an American she took around last year, who asked, "Is this place ever open on a Sunday?"Β Β

Sounds like a nice day! Β
Haha, lol I know what you mean. Once when I was visiting the Holy Sepulcher there was an American tourist who was surprised that Jesus' body is not in the grave...He actually asked 'but where is the body?' Lol.Β

Thank you! I saw Thessa on Akitku's account recently. She's looking great in her winter coat. I'm so glad that that story had a happy ending

As of two days ago I am officially in my fifties, so as well as can be expected in the circumstances
Interesting! So the Order is using vampires? The medieval church always did have a pragmatic streak, but that took me by surprise. I look forward to seeing where this is going

Ah, happy birthday then!! Hope it was a good one nonetheless.
Well, I wasn't sure which way to go...I guess the more intuitive way would have been to have the Order fight the 'demons', but somehow I wanted to go for something different...as you say, the church sure had a practical side to it. I thought a vampiric arms race of sorts might be interesting. As a point of interest though, in our world-building it partly depends on the institution; the Dominicans, who in real life were, after all, very concerned with theological dogma and often served as inquisitors, are very hostile to vampires and do not permit any in their ranks. The Hospitallers, who were generally much more mild and focused primarily on their duties in the Levant, are much more practical.
Anyway, thanks again and happy birthday!!

Then there are the Teutonic Knights, who are busy carving out their own independent state out of formerly pagan lands. You can imagine them needing an advantage against pagan witchcraft. In that connection, you might enjoy this:-
www.amazon.co.uk/Firebird-Taleβ¦
And don't even get me started on the Templars. If you believe everything that's written about them, they seem to be the occult equivalent of the People's Front of Judea versus the Judean People's Front versus the Judean Popular Front. In fact, White Wolf's Dark Ages setting takes that approach to them - so many supernatural actions have their hooks into them that they're a chaotic mess.
I like your idea of making the Dominicans the hardliners. Admittedly, Arnaud "Kill them [all]. God will know his own" Amalric was a Cistercian, but Tomas "No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition" de Torquemada was a Dominican. (*cough* One of those quotes may not be historically accurate...). I find your world-building on this very interesting. Have you thought about doing a short "handbook" detailing the supernatural additions to real-world history?

akitku In reply to JezMiller [2018-03-13 09:04:37 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes good point! Actually we do have a story involving the Pagan uprising in Estonia in 1343 and a vampire Teutonic knight does make an appearance there.
So good to hear you like the world-building. Hmm..I haven't thought of doing a handbook yet. That might be pretty interesting. I have thought of doing a series of little drawings with text explaining a bit more of the supernatural creatures and types of magic...But there is always so little time ! A handbook might be more interesting anyway. Clearly it's something you have experience with, right? How long did it take you to create the handbook for your players?Β

Hah! Ask me again when it's finished. So far it's up to about 78,000 words and there's still a ton to add, plus proof-reading, editing... it's turning into a really long-term project, but it's advancing steadily, if slowly. But most of the world-building in that case was done by White Wold, and I'm just filling in the gaps. Imagining a setting from scratch is a different task. I've sent you a private note with a link to the current draft - I've used your portrait of the Children of the Rout as the header art or one of the chapters

You're too prolific an author for favorites to be useful. I use them as a way to find things again, and despite my blitzing my favorites a few weeks ago to get them reorganized into folders, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to do that as it is. This is one I wanted to look at and think about in more detail later, so I faved it as a reminder to myself to get back to it when I have more time. Β It's an interesting and intriguing idea. IΒ enjoy a lot more of your material than I respond to.Β

It was a very interesting picture. I haven't been a medieval history student for decades, but that was a period I had a particular interest in. ThisΒ OttonianΒ style isn't something I've come across before - in England, if I'm recalling correctly (and heaven knows, I'm no expert, especially after all this time), we evolved straight from Romanesque to early English Gothic.Β
That Teutonic castle atΒ RadzyΕ CheΕmiΕski was fascinating too.
How is Thessa? Still doing well?

It's a very impressive piece of work, beautiful art, and it's a shame you had to abandon it.
Maybe it was the use of the text of the novel that they objected to? There's plenty of Pern fan art on the web and right here at DA. Perhaps you should consider illustrating a series of scenes from the novels, without the text? I'd enjoy seeing you illustrate the settings and characters

That was exactly what the problem was; that we were trying to make a webcomic of DragonQuest that was almost word-for-word accurate. Even though we weren't selling it or in any way trying to profit off of it, they still shut us down. And honestly, Todd McCaffrey was so brutal about it, and kind of a bully threatening us with a lawsuit, that it just drove a stake right through the heart of my fandom. I honestly couldn't understand why his reaction was so over-the-top. I don't think I've even touched a Pern book since. But maybe one of these days I'll do some fan art; I do miss Pern, especially now that Anne McCaffrey isn't with us anymore.
Thank you for your kind words though, it really does help me feel better about the whole mess.Β

You're welcome. They're really superb "representative" members of the classic Masquerade clans. That Gangrel in particular was stunning (I'll admit I'm biased because they're my favourite clan)
