Hi,
I'm interested in going to University for Music and I was wondering where you went, what instrument you auditioned on and approximately when you got interested in music.

Hey,
I'm attending York University in Toronto. I auditioned on bass clarinet, and also submitted some compositions of mine. I got into music in like Grade 7 or something, and I got into composition in Grade 10 I believe. When it came time to apply to university though, I actually applied to the film program at York, and when I didn't get into that, they offered me a different program. During my first year I got more into music, and then applied, and subsequently got into the music program in my second year.

Wow, that's awesome! So you auditioned on the bass clarinet when you applied for the music program the second year of University? Is bass clarinet your primary instrument or do you play Bb as well? I'm planning on applying for the University of Western Ontario but I was told that I couldn't audition on a bass clarinet (I can play one audition piece on it, but not both) so I've been frantically practicing on the Bb clarinet because I haven't played it all through high school. Do you play many other instruments? What grade level was the piece you played at your audition?

Sorry for the late reply. Bass clarinet would be my primary I guess, although I'm not that great on it to be honest, I kinda fell out of playing it once I got to school (because I study composition mostly) with the exception of Wind Symphony. I haven't played Bb in a long time, and I didn't have to play it for my audition at York. I also play piano, and am learning the dizi now (which is a Chinese flute) because I am in the York University Chinese Orchestra.
I'm sorry but I don't remember what piece I played for my audition.

Huh, that's interesting. I don't know about the other schools I applied for, but I know Western has you take private lessons all four years.
