Hi. I'm sorry to annoy you, but I need an answer on the latest issue I sent you a note about before I end up doing something drastic and irrational. It's eating me and killing me from the inside, and every second of having to live with it is Hell on Earth...

I don’t think I’m qualified to offer advice at this level, and am not comfortable doing so—or being asked to do so. All I can say is, a professional would be much, much better qualified than I to do so.

Hi, I mentioned a few months ago that I would be making a board for the astral version of Sun and Moon. The board is finally complete and as soon as I get a nice picture made of it, I'll post it with a credit to you and let you know. Thanks for putting so much effort into making this game!

I was browsing (MLP things I think, but I can't remember exactly what kind) and found your book covers and posters, and they looked nice. I've also started looking at the game rules in your gallery. I haven't read them all the way through yet though.

Sun and Moon is absolutely beautiful. I am extraordinarily tempted to write a fanfic about this game becoming an underground hit with the fillies and colts of Canterlot. There's a lot of different aspects such an event could spark that I'd love to explore.
So, my question is, May I have permission to explicitly use your game in a story with all due credit given and linked, including a cover image (probably just a scaled version of the color game board, or maybe a nice screenshot from the downloadable version), and if so, what do you want the designer and/or publisher to be named in-universe?

In case you haven’t been notified already, I’ve posted the terrestrial game board and rules. I haven’t revised the Compendium yet; that will be a significant undertaking, possibly doubling the page count. If you need to discuss any questions that arise as a result of me changing things around on you, drop me a note!

I've seen the terrestrial game, it looks decent enough as a first draft, but I think the diagrams need a little work. Figures 2-5 all suffer from ghosting optical illusions, which make figures 3-4 identical at first glance. and the movement/starting position diagrams could be improved by enlarging the unit type symbol and removing the sun or moon from the piece.
All in all, it feels like a slightly watered down version of the game. By removing the unique celestial board, it feels like it would easily be lost in the crowd of chess variants already out there.
On the writing front, I've been rather slow for a while, but I'm nearly done with the first short story of 21 Circles. Named after the 12 hours, 6 spheres, sun, moon, and earth of the board. The first is the sun, featuring how Celestia discovers the game due to the upscale marble and precious metals version of the board is mistaken for an endtable and delivered to her, and her rather mixed reactions. The second will shift focus to Luna as she decides to hold judgement back, and see how the ponies who actually play the game behave, rather than fall into the trap of listening just to the detractors (rabble rabble D&D is the work of Discord!)

I may tweak the diagrams; we’ll see.
My strong suspicion is that the terrestrial game will prove to be significantly more playable than the astral game—the very elements that make the astral game more spectacular visually also make it much, much harder to play and to win. There’s a reason chess variants and chantrang-descended games have that family resemblance in common; depart too far from it and the variants tend to become unworkable, or at least harder to make work.
Be sure to let me know when you post the story!

Yes you may; a number of fanfiction writers have asked to use the game in one fashion or another.
If you haven’t already, you may want to check out the Compendium I posted as part of the game’s gallery; among other things it has a faux history of the game—though I deliberately made that history very vague and general to leave a lot of leeway for interpretation. (And, of course, real histories like that tend to have a lot of holes in them anyway!)
To be honest, I haven’t the faintest notion about an in-universe source, since my vision of the game’s backstory is that it arose in the mists of history, as did chess and its relatives, with at best legends regarding its invention and early development. Moreover, I’m of an older generation that predates the idea of character-versions-of-oneself, and thus have never created a pony identity for myself.
I also am considering the idea of adding a more conventional rectilinear board as an alternative, possibly amending the history to include that as the older, classical form of the game, with the round board as a later, perhaps medieval or early modern, innovation.

May I suggest a type of compromise? If the chess-king version seems underpowered, and the current version does not allow banishment easily, could you have a situational movement system? If a princess is currently in eclipse, they are limited to one space movement with no capture. When outside of eclipse they have the option of flying over pieces, turning a corner, or taking from two (or one) star away. This might solve you issue because a chain of eclipses would be much more difficult to avoid, the ideal solution involving external pieces. However, it it easier and better to avoid initial eclipse, but you can't do that forever.

It’s an interesting idea, though it would have to overcome the major hurdle that currently hangs up the game: getting the opposing princess into eclipse in the first place. The dilemma everyone is gnawing on is that it’s too difficult to achieve that first eclipse, with the game devolving into a Keystone Kops-style pursuit around the board.

Sefzaps In reply to CatspawDTP [2012-10-31 03:51:11 +0000 UTC]
in some quick tests. I find that I can get the initial eclipse to be not too challenging when you have one piece on one side and another piece on the other (assuming you cannot capture when eclipsed). I don't know about banishment, though. I'll look through my idea more thoroughly when I have the time.

eeeeh, I'm not too keen on the idea of limiting the princess to the twilight line etc. It'd be like a variant of chess where the king can only move around the edge of the board. It also means that the two princesses are almost incapable of assisting their troops in achieving eclipse/banishment, and in an endgame with one or two pieces on either side, having the princess be able to contribute towards achieving banishment would be fairly crucial.

Your thoughts echo mine on the subject, but I felt in fairness I at least should let folks evaluate the suggestions. I’m hoping the “hybrid” idea will work well enough to nail down the game.

With Topgull's solution, all you have to do is get right outside a unicorn's range, and then jump right in it's face. Since unicorns can only capture from exactly 2 stars away, getting one star away prevents it from capturing you. I agree that unicorns should be able to move 2 stars along an arc, because if they could only move one, it would impossible for them to escape once a any other pony bypasses it's range. With these altered rules, any soldier can capture any other soldier, and any soldier can evade capture in a one-on-one face off.

That’s exactly why TopGull structured the moves and captures the way he did, and he did an admirable job of analysis and development!
