Old DA needs to dieWell, since everybody is talking about New DA (fka Eclipse) and giving their opinions, I guess I'll share mine as well, because why the hell not? I'm gonna regret this, don't I? Deviantart.com will adopt the new layout definitely and permanently on May 20th. This means that the option to use the old layout will cease to exist, it will be discontinued for good, that's it, hasta la vista, finito, no more green! Also no more "Eclipse", it won't be "Eclipse" anymore , just "DeviantArt". New DeviantArt.And people are angry. There are journals, forum threads, petitions and movements to try to stop it. Some people are even working on their own art sites to migrate to. Oh wow! Now, a lot of these users are angry simply because they dislike change, but I'm not gonna talk about them in this journal. I believe not all people complain just because they dislike change, some have very valid concerns about the new site. I want to talk to them here.Yes, New DA is coming and there is still a lot of work to be done to it, bugs to be fixed and features missing, and some that are simply not as good as the old ones. Heck! there are even entire sections not in the new layout, like groups or the forums.New DA is indeed unfinished, is still a work in progress. So why the hell are they rolling it out now? Why not, ya know, finishing it first, before releasing it? Because they can't move on until the old layout is discontinued. As long as the old layout remains, it will require resources, attention and support. It takes space in the servers, it requires money.And because Old DA and New DA are two completely different monsters, while they exist together they're bound to break each other, sometimes they change something in New DA and something breaks in Old DA, and that's why everything gets buggy. DA can't fully focus on improving and finishing the new layout until it gets rid of the old one, and once this finally happens, hopefully changes and improvements will happen more quickly.This is also the reason why they can't keep it optional forever. People ask "Why can't they just leave it as it is today? Keep the option to switch between versions, how difficult is that? They're already doing it!" This is the reason, maintaining both in the long run is not possible and they clash with each other, it's simply not an option. Ever wondered why not a single site does this? Not even big networks like Facebook or Youtube. Sometimes they give the option to use the new layout and change to the old one while is still in development, very much like DA is doing today, but that doesn't last long, they all eventually change and don't revert back, ever. So in closing: this step is necessary. Old DA needs to die, so things can improve. And this is where you say "But I don't like it! I have these and these and these issues with it!" I get you! As I mentioned earlier, I believe there are some very valid concerns from the community, things that need to be addressed, like groups, which currently are not being touched yet. And there are also some changes we'll just have to accept and adapt to and this will only happen once the change happens and the option to switch back is no more. It will be hard at first, and people will continue to be angry, but we all will get used to it eventually, as it has happened always.Remember: New DA as it is today is not final, what you see right now is not the final product, it will be improved and added on. I believe some people freak out because they don't realize this or tend to forget it, is easy to think that this is how things will be from now on, with all the bugs and limitations, so no wonder why they think this change sucks. But it won't be like this forever, things will change and improve. Sure it would be amazing to have everything finished first and then rolled out, but that is not how things work and we'll have to be patient during this process.Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna miss the old site too, I've been using it since it was released 10 years ago. I also have my own issues with New DA, but I have confidence that things will get better. Why? Because I've seen it before.DA Version 7 was released in May 2010, go and read the comments in that journal, the community was as angry as it is today and complaining about exactly the same things, is slower, is uglier, previous version was better, nobody asked for this, I can't find anything! etc. Admittedly, when it was first released, version 7 wasn't the best of the best, but things were improved with time, some things changed, the top bar changed, symbols changed, new features like points and groups were implemented, and a very large list of etceteras. And as time passed, people got used to it and look at us now! People is fighting for it! So please have patience and remember, this version of the new site is not definite, and many of your current concerns will most probably be fixed with time, and for the ones that won't, you'll adapt and get used to them. Great things are coming, but some changes need to happen first. Before you go to the comment section, remember that I have nothing to do with New DA's development and have no power whatsoever to change it or prevent it, so you're free to disagree with me on what I just said and discuss in a civil manner, but coming here to whine, protest or tell me everything that is wrong with the new site, won't be of much use, simply because I can't do anything really!...
