The research and painting both attempt to solve human conditions in a technical manner(!) Yes Cris, portraiture has moved forward a lot since the 1400s! This blog describes techniques adopted by Old Masters for problems like gradation of tones. Ther are some interesting comparisons

No worries GreyScale36, your work is sublime, specifically the feel of layers of tones, on the skin surface (similar perceptual effect to renaissance-time sfumato) so professional.. I get an impression you worked in the graphic art industry in some form before this series?

GreyScale36 In reply to AyanAyzodei [2012-02-16 13:05:54 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much for your positive comments, Ayan!!! I'm going to have to check out this 'sfumato' you speak of. I've never worked in the graphic art industry in my life [wish I did]. . .I'm a 'Broker' turned self-employed artist
!!! How about you, you work/worked in the graphic art industry?

AyanAyzodei In reply to GreyScale36 [2012-02-16 14:17:27 +0000 UTC]
Well your work is wonderful No I'm also self-taught, but my training is medical research. I am trying to expand on my portraits as much as I can. Oh, sfumato's direct from Italian for smoke(eg. 'fumes') The technique was pioneered by da Vinci, to create visual & psychological depth, giving an illusion of shadow, depth, and smooth transitions, centuries before photo-realism

GreyScale36 In reply to AyanAyzodei [2012-02-16 17:07:46 +0000 UTC]
Thank you once again, Ayan for the compliment! Now, that's always an interesting subject to me - medical research! Also, thank you for the head's up in regards to the 'fumes' technique [I'm going to have a good look at this technique later on this evening]. Should be interesting to see how the art of portraiture has somewhat advanced over time since the da Vinci days
