How are you doing? I know we haven't talked in over a year, but I just wanted to extend a sort of handshake I suppose.

Oh, I'm doing well. I have new obsessions, and I think my drawing's getting better (these two things may be related). You?

Well, we're looking on trying to get a therapist for me (psychologist?), because we've all accepted I'm probably mentally ill at this point. I have had another disastrous year but I do want to get better, especially after this fiasco. I'm glad you are improving. (I've moved on to new obsessions too, specifically League of Legends at the moment.) I am currently doing fine though at this particular moment. (Sorry, just trying to do catchup for you.)

That's fine. Just be warned that you're not going to get much out of me besides World of Warcraft for a while. Though I'm sure you already knew that. Ahhh, all-consuming media fixations!

Sorry to bother you again on this, but I have another grammar question. Is "have/has been" a past tense or present tense?
π: 0 β©: 1
Allysdelta In reply to Scorpius02 [2013-06-02 09:21:47 +0000 UTC]
They're both past tense, referring to something that's happened before the present.
For example, you might say "he had made his disapproval known" or "you have made that clear before" if you're referring to someone saying something much earlier. I hope that makes sense.

Scorpius02 In reply to Allysdelta [2013-06-02 15:49:22 +0000 UTC]
Oh okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me ^^
I thought it was some weird mixture of past and present which I know it's not possible but my brain is just that retarded.

I was lucky--my mom's an editor, and she's drummed that into my head from an early age. Also, all through my childhood, I read stuff above my grade level for the fun of it. I can't speak for everyone, but reading lots of really good literature helps in putting your sentences together. You'll remember how an author constructed his or her story, and it can be used as a guide. Watch out for JK Rowling, though. There are some grammatical mistakes in her books, as fun as they are to read.

Oh yeah, I remember how my teacher kept telling us not to use JK Rowling books to learn grammar.

Try reading movie reviews by the late Roger Ebert ! THAT man really knew how to put words together, and I read his reviews all the time when I was a kid. Type a movie released before 2013 in the search bar, and you should find his work.

Can you help explain to me what the difference between using "anyways" & "anyway" and "beside" & "besides"? You're the only pro writer that I know and can talk to. The other errors I kinda understand why I was wrong, but these 2 couples, I don't.
If it's not troubling you of course.

Allysdelta In reply to Scorpius02 [2013-05-02 05:16:28 +0000 UTC]
Anyway can be used in both dialogue and description, to say "regardless" or "in any case", and is generally the accepted form. Anyways is informal and should only be used in casually-spoken dialogue.
Beside describes being next to something physically. Besides can mean either "furthermore" ("besides, it doesn't change anything!"), "in addition" ("there are seven adults and two kids besides"), or "otherwise" ("He's not going to do much besides that").
Did that help any?

Wow, now I get it. That was very helpful. Beside & Besides should've been obvious for me. I'm such an idiot!
Anyway & Anyways is going to be a little tricky since I tend to be mixing those a lot.
Thanks a bunch for the explanation. ^^

Just use "anyway" if you're unsure.

Scorpius02 In reply to Allysdelta [2013-05-01 19:06:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks
But I personally thought that my own entry was kinda sudden in some part like what the judge said. I came up with some of the stuff while still writing some of the parts like the cypress tree. I came up with that while I was writing in the middle of part 2.
Not to mention my grammar needed more work. I seem to misuse word a lot. -_-; I even proof read it twice. I didn't even know 'dinning hall' was supposed to be 'dining hall.' My spell checker didn't mark it red, so I've been writing like that since forever.

Allysdelta In reply to Scorpius02 [2013-05-01 19:21:26 +0000 UTC]
"Dinning" means that something is being noisy, so it is a legitimate word. Just not the right one.
Gwenevere's definitely right, about Sierra bouncing back too quickly in my entry, though I attribute that to still being shell-shocked and therefore half in denial. I'll probably have to explore her thoughts on this in a future story.

Scorpius02 In reply to Allysdelta [2013-05-01 19:27:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, the mind is a very tricky thing to understand. I personally believe that minds won't always react the same way for everybody. People can react differently if they have a different mind set and reflex due to life experience. I thought Sierra was fine since she is a tough girl and have seen quite a lot of stuff already, so I though it was understandable if she recovered quickly from the shock.

Yeah... this might be a good way to explore her coping mechanisms. Currently, she seems to be dealing by distracting herself from thinking about it. Probably not the healthiest thing to do, but oh well.
It's not so much that she's killed, but that it was an innocent.

My apologies for stupidness!! It really wasn't meant to be an insult or anything I didn't know you were very strict about not wanting people using your stuff without permission, and I'm an idiot, and normally I do jokes like that with my other friends and I didn't intend to upset you T^T
Please forgive me!!
