His current backstory, which can be changed, is that he once served under the Faerie Queen. However, after humans attacked the village and killed the old queen, the prince exiled him, condemning him to wander for all eternity. The prince didn't realize that he was quite comfortable living on his own, with the animals as his companions. And so he lived for many years. Recently, though, the animals have brought signs of destruction, signs that humans were becoming more and more bold. And he knew what he had to do.
