Animats are typically genetically modified humans who chose to have their bodies modified to resemble (to a greater or lesser degree) animals. That said, there are also animats whose parents chose to have germ-cell modifications so that their features would be passed onto their children. One of the most common types of Animates, like the servant girl above, resemble the trolls of Scandinavian folklore.Animats are nearly always allies of the Khet, as are the mega corps that offer animat modifications. The AeroG Investment and Terra Nova Corp is the most powerful ally of the Khets. By helping the Khet, AeroG underminds the strength of the Ashar and their allied mega corps - who are of course AeroG's competitors. They also get a large percentage of their human customers assets prior to using their patented retroviruses to modify them into animats. The khet get much needed reinforcements plus any skills the animats can bring with them. Those with valuable/needed skills (like carpenters) are also charged lower fees to become animats and are smuggled into the safest Khet controlled areas and/or given permanent 'settler tents' (see here: sta.sh/227rdt1n3pzw?edit=1 ). And finally the animats get the chance of a new life, adventure, freedom, and the change to have a place they can truly call their own. This may sound strange to some, but many are not content with sub standard social housing available. And as the dream of owning ones own home died some generations ago due to a generation now derogatorily called the "me-generation"... many consider the risk of death or slavery at the hands of the Ashar raiders in the wilderness of the Commonwealth of the Kingdom of Vardar and the Grand Dutchy of Amardis a risk worh taking.
