In Greek mythology, the river that divided the mortal world with the underworld was called the River Styx. Β The goddess of this river, who shares the same name, was a daughter of Oceanus. She both represents and controls hatred. In the Titan wars she chose to be an alley of Zeus, and was rewarded with a palace in the Underworld.

There is so much to like here! The details are wonderful, and really a factor in illustrating the mythology behind the River Styx. The clothing details are lovely, and add in a lushness to the attire. There are beautifully illustrated flowers and leaves, with excellent coloring. However, I feel as if the figure's skin is a little too warm for the background. I can see hints of cooler colors, particularly around her hands next to the glowing smoke, but it's still just not quite as much as I'd like to see to make her feel as if she is part of the world. Overall, there is a lovely sense of mysticism and magic in this, though. Congratulations on a well deserved DD!

I love this painting, just like I love all your work. The color scheme of blues, and purples, and greens gives it a wonderfully nighttime feel. Your composition is also engaging and keeps the eye moving around to see new details while always returning to the central subject. Do you choose the animals you include for symbolic reasons? Are the wolves meant to represent hate--or the raven?Β
