Day 26 of Inktober 2023. Today is Kai from Phantasy Star 0

I FUCKING HATE DRAWING HUMANS!

Anyway, here’s Kai from Phantasy Star 0, a DS game I played as a kid and I’m pretty sure it is why I dual blade in most games. This game is probably one of the first Action RPG I played on my own? Mystic Heroes and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles were probably the first ones I played but in that little kid being carried by a relative kinda way. I remember liking it and the characters being the main reason why. Kai, Ogi and Sarisa were a great little trio and I grew quite attached to them back in the day to the point that I remembered their character design more than anything else in the game. Like the models are so funny now, because it was a full 3D game back on the DS which seems to have had about as much processing power as a smart fridge, but their designs were so memorable because of the characters that I completely forgot what the game actually looked like. It’s probably the first time graphic slapped me in the face with how little they matched up to my memory.

perhaps one of the reasons the character design stuck in my memory so much was because of a cute little side question you get in the end/post game. Basically all your team mates are being accused of various different minor crimes in the city you protect. Turns out they have a bunch of mimics running about pretending to be them. I remember this specific side quests because rather than just recycling the character’s actual portraits, you know like a lazy game dev would do, they created different ones for the double. Kai’s is pretty obvious (he gets a flipped colour palette so the red on his coat is yellow or something like that) and I think Ogi’s head is the wrong shape but Sarisa’s one is so close, the only difference is whether or not they have freckles. That mission really stuck in my mind because obviously most games wouldn’t bother, they’d just reuse the asset.

I also remember loving the strange little robot companion you had with you. I had literally no idea what they did as a kid, they were just this cool little floaty thing that changed designs based on what you fed it. It wasn’t until I replayed the game years later that I realised they actually had a gameplay function. I still found myself feeding them based on what design looked cool though.
