The first USS Gagarin NCC 1309 started life as a Sheppard Class battlecruiser in 2252 and was lost in November 2256 at the hands of Klingons along with the USS Hoover and USS Muroc.The second USS Gagarin NCC 1309-A was an Oberth science vessel in the year 2279, the Gagarin was under the command of Captain Gralev, with a crew of fifty. That year, they were assigned to study planet Nuvidula IV as a possible source of dilithium. The Gagarin was attacked by an Imperial Klingon vessel, the IKS Vo'taq. Once they were boarded, Gralev initiated the self destruct program and destroyed the ship, though not before the Klingons were able to beam themselves and twenty-eight prisoners to their own ship. The third USS Gagarin was a Saber class escort that was credited with the destruction of 100 Cardassian freighters on commerce-raiding patrols in the Dominion War during the 2370's and was mothballed in 2381. The fourth and current USS Gagarin is the prototype of the Gagarin Class Miracle Worker Battlecruiser is named after the U.S.S. Gagarin NCC 1309. Advancements and coordination with Starfleet's allies have been able to make unique, energy-intensive systems work, and the ship was designed to give it the potential for such miraculous systems in the 25th century, notably some very unique EPS conduit routing and new advanced Tactical Matrices. Following the recovery of Yard 39 in 2410, 150 years after it was abandoned in the TL-9139 system in 2259, Starfleet revived ship classes of that bygone era and developed new types based on the recovered hulks. The Gagarin was the lead ship of a new battlecruiser class, based on the Shepard-class hulks recovered at Yard 39. The Gagarin was constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards in orbit of Sol III in the Vulcan sector.

The ship is a work of efficiency and survivability. The Gagarin class is a direct descendant of the Shepard class frame into a 25th century Miracle Worker Battlecruiser, The battlecruisers are designed with two effector arrays that can generate multiple effects, The ship has multiple redundant life support and power systems so that even cut into pieces; parts of the Gagarin will still have power and atmosphere for the crew. The nacelles are a complicated mix of three different coils used for warp and slipstream plus transwarp aperture generators. Possessing many amenities including a full cetacean tank, several holodecks, a theater and an arboretum the Gagarin class provides long term comfort for its crew.
