I could just barely make out the shapeAs I met him… her?… them…
Deep within the forest roads…
In the fog.
Could one even call this fog?
Surely this was something more…
“Where are you headed?”
I asked.
Hoping for the best.
But fearing the worst.
“The next town over.”
…Was the answer.
Voice barely more than a rasp.
My heart sank.
“I just came from there”, I said.
I could hear my own voice tremble…as it left my lips…
“I’m sorry”, they answered.
How does one react to that?
It was not me who was owed that apology.
And frankly I’m not entirely certain they were the one who needed to give it either.
But they had.
Because that was all they could do.
That was all anyone could do.
We stood in silence for a bit.
Before walking past each other.
Both of us taking large circles.
Behind me I could hear the toll of bells.
