If you're lucky, you have someone in your life who's present, dependable—someone who sees the best in you even when you can't. Such is the nature of Calvin, the seventh protagonist in the ensemble cast of my Urban Fantasy story, and a respected figure among the students and faculty of Rosamund University and Arbordale at large. Generous with his time, his home, and his food, there are few who speak ill of Calvin, and any who do are often motivated by petty jealousy or their own feelings of inadequacy. Calvin owes much of his munificent disposition to the many ways he saw monsterkind—and even the humans who sympathized with them—subjugated, abused, or otherwise oppressed in various locales around the world, his parents' military careers bringing him to live in nations scarred by misunderstandings and war. Now a pillar of University affairs, Calvin finds himself unwittingly implicit in yet another conflict, one that threatens monster and humankind alike.
