SPRING EVENT
PREQUEL
Discovering Spring
Little Bird walked quietly through the glass, his nose into the air as he breathed in the oncoming warmth of spring. Heightened hearing and smell could feel the earth awakening more than any other horse's eyes could. The damp of the grass. The sun soothing brittle, winter-rattled hair. The fresh clean scent of blossoms floating through the air. It was the foal's first spring, and with each delicate step he took, the more his soul awakened. Though eyeless, the lad had taken to wandering farther and farther from his mother, and this specific spring day whispered sweet secrets of adventure that no young equine could ignore.
Emboldened by the temptress of spring, Elbee trusted his senses, pulling him farther across the tangled growing meadow, letting fragile petals kiss his graceful form. The world, though silent, was full of noise and the colt wanted to discover ever inch of it. He tasted the tender new shoots of clover, his velvet muzzle brushing against the rugged bark of reaching juniper. He stood quietly, letting his mind imagine what ever sound, touch, taste and smell could look like, though he had no real concept of sight. It was simply a moment of being, of understanding, and of revelation.
It was in this quiet instant that the loving embrace of budding, that a cruel and dangerous rush of winter tingled along Elbee's spine. As if blinded by sudden sight, the colt realized just how quiet the world really was. Though teaming with talk of everything else one could think of, the one thing he needed was no where near. The absence of that strong and comforting presence of his mother hit him like a ton of bricks, and breathing starting to become erratic, Elbee began to panic.
He had only been lost like this once before, and he had been lucky enough to find his new friend Glock. But there was nothing here now, and that shiver of dread that only those sensitive to the world could feel, promised of something more terrifying than simple exploration. Flight or fight had no response in the foal as freeze took over his soul like the icy grip of winter. What was he to do? He had no point of reference or lessons of teaching as how to conquer this horrid problem. He only knew to lean on others, and not his own capable self.
A tiny nicker of help escaped his lips as he flung his ears to and fro, trying to pick out any sound that could help him.
And suddenly, he heard something...
