Description
Alright, the following drawing is part of a request from a DeviantArt user, who asked me to draw one of her favorite animated couples from one of her favorite movies as part of the twentieth anniversary of this movie, which at the same time, I must admit that it is one of my favorite films from when I was a child, because I have always been a big fan of Japanese animated films, especially those created by director Hayao Miyazaki and although the animation of those films is very bizarre, I always liked the plot of his stories. This movie I'm talking about is called: “Howl's Moving Castle”, directed by Hayao Miyazaki based on the 1986 novel written by Diana Wayne Jones (whose original title in Japanese is: “Hepburn: Hauru No Ugoku Shiro”), produced by Toshio Suzuki, produced by the animation company Studio Ghibli and released in 2004.
The story is about a young girl with long brown hair combed in a braid, kind but quite shy and introverted named Sophie Hatter, who works in a business as a milliner and leads a rather heavy life full of hard work, being she the eldest of three sisters and who must carry the responsibility of keep moving the business forward. One day, after leaving work, Sophie is heading to her younger sister's house named Lettie to visit her, when she is harassed on the way by a couple of the king's soldiers, but fortunately, she is saved by an attractive young man with blonde hair and blue eyes while they escape from some strange black creatures that seem to be made of mud and waste and are wearing hats, who then takes her for a walk jumping through the air between the roofs and rooftops of the houses, putting her safe in another house, saying goodbye to her. When she meets with her sister Lettie and tells her what happened, her sister tells her that she should be careful since that mysterious man could be the wizard Howl, who is said to have the power to attract attractive young girls to fall in love with him, although Sophie doesn't believe that she herself can be attractive and pushes aside the idea that anyone could fall in love with her. Later, Sophie returns to the hat shop to continue working and is about to close the store, when a witch known as "The Witch Of The Waste" arrives, who is jealous of Sophie for having attracted Howl’s attention with her beauty and after Sophie asks her to leave the store, the witch is amused to see someone standing up to her and casts a curse on Sophie turning her into a 90 year old woman and tells Sophie that she will not be able to tell anyone about her curse and leaves the store. Scared with her new appearance and now being cursed, Sophie decides to find a way to return to normal and everyone treats her according to her age and she leaves the town to the countryside and helps a scarecrow to stand up and he comes to life and Sophie gives him the nickname “Turnip Head” and since she helped the scarecrow, he helps her get to the moving castle (or walking castle), since this castle has a strange structure that allows it to move from one place to another and upon entering the castle (since she discovers that the castle belongs to Howl) Sophie poses as a maid looking for work to take care of the housework and where she meets Markl, a red-haired boy who is Howl’s apprentice and Calcifer, a fire demon who keeps Howl's castle moving and who immediately notices Sophie's curse and tells her that he will help her break her curse if she helps him break the curse that has him bound to Howl, to which Sophie accepts. Thus, Sophie works as Howl's maid in his castle, getting to know him better and developing a friendship with Calcifer and Markl, but every time she tries to talk about her curse, she cannot do so, forcing herself to remain silent, generating a lot of frustration at the same time. She also notices that Howl is very proud and vain and flaunts his beauty and one day, he throws a tantrum after Sophie mixes his potions with his bath lotions accidentally causing Howl's hair to turn dark and sometimes, Sophie rejuvenates unconsciously and she herself does not seem to realize it, having to behave strictly and very seriously with those who live in Howl's castle. Meanwhile, Sophie's nation is caught in a war with a neighboring kingdom, which is searching for its missing prince, to which the king decides to summon Howl to his castle so that he can fight in the war, although Howl does not want to do so, feeling obligated, wanting to be free of that responsibility and not wanting to get involved in a conflict of that measure; so he asks Sophie to pretend to be his mother to go before the king instead of him and tell him that Howl is too cowardly to fight in the war, giving Sophie a magic ring to guide her back to him to keep her safe.
Then, Sophie goes to the king's castle, also encountering with The Witch Of The Wastes again, who was also summoned for an audience with the king and upon arriving at the castle and Sophie demands that she removes her curse although the witch tells her that she does not know how to do it, and upon reaching the entrance of the castle, Sophie carries the king's dog up the stairs while trying to beat the witch to get to the king first, but this turns out to be a trap, since the king's royal sorceress, Suliman, strips the witch of her powers for having become greedy after making a deal with a demon and for having used her powers selfishly, returning her to her true age, becoming an old and powerless woman. Sophie meets the sorceress Suliman, who tells her that if Howl does not come forward to fight in the name of the king, she will also strip him of his powers in exchange for helping him defeat his inner demon, but Sophie tells her that Howl will solve it himself his problems when at that moment, Howl appears to save Sophie, managing to escape from there along with the depowered witch and the king’s dog, although the sorceress tries to cast a spell on Howl turning him into a monster, but Sophie helps him maintain control, while the soldiers break into the houses of Jenkins and Pendragon (Howl's two aliases) and discover that they are nothing more than abandoned buildings in disguise; the castle's magic door had allowed travel through both fake storefronts.
Sophie discovers that Howl's life is somehow linked to Calcifer's and that Howl has been transforming into a bird-like creature to interfere with both sides in the war, but each transformation makes it harder for him to return to his human form. Howl then magically links the castle to Sophie's house and parks the castle on the outskirts of town. A few days later, the city is bombed by enemy planes and Suliman's henchmen attack Sophie's house and hat shop. Howl goes out to protect the group. Sophie then gets everyone out of the house and pulls Calcifer out of the fireplace, which collapses the castle. The Witch of the Waste realizes that Calcifer has Howl's heart and grabs the fire demon, setting herself on fire. Sophie panics and pours water on the Witch, which soaks Calcifer almost killing him in the process. The rest of the castle is divided into two; Sophie falls into a chasm and becomes separated from the group.
Following the enchanted ring, Sophie enters a scene from the past, where she sees a young Howl catch a falling star, Calcifer, and give him his heart. Sophie asks them to find her in the future as they teleport her. She returns to the present, finds Howl, and they reunite with the others. The Witch returns Howl's heart and giving Calcifer her hair sacrificing it to save the others and Sophie places it back inside Howl, reviving him and freeing Calcifer, although he decides to stay and live with them. Sophie's curse is broken, although her hair remains white. After she kisses Turnip Head on the cheek, he returns to his human form, revealing himself to be Justin, the missing prince of the enemy kingdom. He reveals that only the kiss of her true love can break his curse. After seeing that Sophie's affections are with Howl, he quickly heads home to end the war, but promises that he will see them again. Suliman, looking through a glass globe, also decides to end the war. Some time later, the bombers fly under a dark sky over a green, reclaimed countryside heading into another war, while Sophie, Howl, and the others travel in the opposite direction in a new flying castle. As the castle moves away, Howl and Sophie kiss on the castle's balcony, ready to start a happy life together.
The truth is that the film has a lot of symbolism and many teachings and one of the teachings is that you must be brave to fight for what you want, valuing your own freedom and I think that you also have to give more value to inner beauty because one day, physical beauty will end and the only thing someone has is their own value and self-worth and their heart and looking for reasons to get ahead without giving weight to material things and both Howl and Sophie gave more value to physical appearance, but as Sophie becomes more interested in others and helps others with their problems, she becomes younger and gains more confidence and security in herself and that life is worth living regardless of our age because there are positive aspects in each stage of life and also it’s important to demonstrate compassion towards others. It really is one of my favorite films from Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki and I like to see the romance between Howl and Sophie, these being one of my animated couples from Japanese films.
I hope that the person who asked me for the drawing liked it and enjoyed it. As part of the request, I decided to draw Howl and Sophie kissing in the background with how they look at the end of the movie (Howl with black hair and Sophie with short white hair) and draw them both in the front jumping between the roofs and the clouds having a good time (Sophie with her long brown hair in a braid and Howl with blonde hair). I know I still need to improve my drawings, but it was fun to do it to improve my drawing skills.
With nothing more to add, I will continue working on my next drawing request to include in my art gallery with my other drawings. 💃🏻🎩👩❤️💋👨👗👒💍🔥☀️🌙💐🌷🌹🪻🪷🌺🌸🌼🌻🌈🌧️🏰🌋⛰️🏔️🗻🎑🏞️🌅🌄🌠🎇🎆🌇🌆🏙️🌃🌌
