Description

watercolor, charcoal and pen on paper (300g)
45cm x 60cm

work in progress [link]

Some time ago I saw this Samuel Aranda's photo on the web [link] ,
I was touched by the emotion of this pose, by the full and empty spaces of this embrace.

I saw the picture you based this off on, and you have not managed to capture all of the original picture's intensity, but close enough that you have certainly made most who have seen this be struck by the piece.

You have beautiful technique, and as an aspiring watercolorist, it's very difficult for me to get the colours to mix the way I want them to, but you have managed to do it almost flawlessly. Your colour scheme is lovely, and all the colours mix very well together.

I like the way you put the red around the woman's eyelids; it almost feels as if she has just finished crying over the man, and is now clutching him to her bosom as if all who approached her would try and harm him.

Overall, this is a gorgeous painting. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I'm not really gonna say anything about technique and whatnot but I realize you don't do a lot of work with more than 1 figure in the picture and this is rather different. The physical contact between them makes the impact and how the hair wraps around both of them is a beautiful concept to me.
I don't know if I'm just digging too much into it, but the contrast between the two of them, one colorful the other in a grayer palette, it really leaves a lot to the audience to ponder. Anyways, can't wait to see this finished!

Your pieces are dominated by very unique abstract watercolour techniques. This is the first time that I'm so attracted to watercolour portraits. I always hated watercolour. I feel very inspired! The reason why this piece of artwork attracted my eye is because of the shades of red you added to the woman's eye area. It gives a emotional feel. I like how you actually made use of the hair of the woman to add in colors. Very beautiful choice of colors. The darker shades of colors gives this piece a sense of seriousness, as well as creating very beautiful contrast.

I think it would look better if you can complete the details of the man's fingers, and perhaps can use a white gel liner to add abstract texture to the man's hair. The contrast around the area where the woman's arm is hooked around the man's seems not strong enough, adding a bit of color there may have helped, or might even create more balance. Nonetheless, this is still a mind-blowing piece!

This is the first watercolor paint with such an emotional expression on their faces. I think that is an romantic idea the colorful hair. Its shows every feeling of the girl.
I love the way you used your brush with such delicate. This paint is just inspiring. I can feel their emotion with just one look. The first time i saw it it was euphoric.
And every time i see it, its like an unending Deja Vu.
I have seen every paint of yours and i really like your work.
This is my first critic, i have writed down my thought when i see this. Great Work!

I'm not sure how to write a critique, but here it is:
When I saw this for the first time, I was like "e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="23" height="15" alt="" title="Wow!"/>" I couldn't believe it's painted with watercolors. I didn't know that someone can paint with watercolors like that. I didn't like watercolors at all until I saw your work. And it inspired me to paint with watercolors. The painting is very original because I saw the image you painted it from. You use watercolors magnificently and I love how they "blend" in some places. I love the contrast and I like the atmosphere in this painting. I'm sure that this touched many people. It's so expressive and emotional. I LOVE IT!!

Your works always impress me, with their depth and use of colors. This is no exception. The embrace between the supposed mother and son in the picture is masterfully recreated here, and perhaps not, but I feel as if the colors within the mother's hair may also represent her internal emotions, perhaps crowded in and jumbled together? I could almost feel the pain in the son in the picture, through the strain in his chest and neck, and the redness of his skin, perhaps from crying? Here, I felt some of that pain was lost, however, that may have been your intention. The sense of dimension and value in your work is prevalent and I commend you on yet another wonderful artwork! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

I wasn't sure what to think when I first saw your work. I loved the style, colors and contrast between the two subjects but I couldn't get a feel for the emotion behind the womans face and the limpness of the man. Then I looked at the photo from the link you shared and I realized what I was looking at. This piece expressed what may have been going on "behind the veil" in the photo. You have done an excellent job of taking what was merely a subtle experience in the photo and using the colors and technique of running the water colors to express the pain the mother may have been feeling for her sons suffering. Very well done.

Watercolors are always my favourite traditional tool, and you're one of it's best expositors here in dA. The outlines are not defined making the figures ethereal, but also very real.
The woman looks powerful, very alive and strong due the combination of saturated colors, specially because of the mix of warm and cold colors. The man, otherwise, looks soft, delicate, general.
It's a very creative piece of art, that shows your skills with water techniques. This is my first critique here, and I'm not really concise while describing my thoughts, but it's what I have to say. Your work is amazing e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

I think the color and dimension help add to the emotive impact of this work. I get a strong sense of narrative, of holding on to what is fading away. The way her form is so full of color, a metaphorical visual representation of life, vibrancy, emotion, and his is so pale creates not only a good contrast but conveys a sense of something missing in him. She clings to him but he is fading away. If this is your intent I would have liked to see more of this theme expressed in his form. The bold drops push on his back, leaning him toward her. Instead I think you might have tried letting the line of his back become less defined and indistingishable from the background. I think it would further enforce the feeling of his being there, and yet unreachable. His form could visually become the white empty space around her, surrounding her but intangible.
I love how the bleeding colors seem to speak of her tears/emotions pouring out. I think the way you have left her face clean of tears while having her hair pour down is a much stronger and more effective way of communicating her complex emotions than the more cliche tear on cheek. I applaud your expression there.
I am curious about the hand like shape in red on her shoulder. It adds almost another dimension, as though she is in one plane, reach out to try and grasp him, and behind her is someone on yet a 3rd plane reaching out to comfort her.
Overall I think it is a very sucessful work. It powerfully expresses emotion and leaves lots of room for the viewer to create their own narrative when they view the piece. The circular composition keeps the viewers eye running aroudn the image again and again. I think a viewer can approach this and connect the emotions expressed to their own life and experiences and thereby find it more appealing. I am curious to how intentional or accidental some of the visual metaphors are. I believe you can delve yet deeper into the visual language you are creating. But as is, excellect work. good visual language. good form. nice metaphorical depth, mystery and narrative.

This is absolutely phenomenal. I think the contrast between the vague colours of the male, compared to the striking hair of the female, it's just beautiful! The single white strands that slide down her hair really add dramatic effect, and I love how the hair drips down onto her arms. The main feature I love though is the anatomy: how perfect their arms are, the collar bones and jaw lines; they really are just awesome. I don't know where you get your inspiration from but you come up with some fantastic pieces. I find the 'universe-like' colour effect just amazing and how it looks as though you're looking into some sort of second dimension. Yet again it's a truly gripping piece and I can never praise you enough. A very big fan. Well done.

I'm not a great artist, or critique, but there really is something about your art that draws me in. What really spurred my curiosity in this piece was the intensity of the pose. Something about her delicate embrace and his quiet posture fabricate something so fragile, yet so full of power.

I can't get over how much emotion you've managed to portray with their bodies alone. Though his face is hidden, his presence and stature seep feelings. Her hands and arms are so daintily holding him, and exude grace and comfort.

The colors you chose, by the way.. oh man. The colors are so brilliant. The deep blue's and purples and the warm and cold colors swirling together were so confidently chosen.

All together, a very nice piece of art! It really is lustrous (; haha

Gorgeous work with the woman's hair, first off, not just with the color bleeds and the scheme of it, but I love the touches of white gouache/masked areas for thin hair-strands within that large space, to remind us she had really long hair. I always like "outlining" subjects or objects with the space around them, e.g. their arms and the better part of the man's torso and neck, and to balance that, which is a very nice touch, you didn't add too much shading within his body - just enough to distinguish his arms and collarbone for the audience. What I like MOST about this, however, is the bit of red and yellow near her eye, because that little touch of heavier wash keeps the audience from zeroing in on the big dark shape of her hair and staying there, for when you squint at it, even though her "eye shadow" is a much smaller area than her hair, I find that I can see that equally as well as the big shape of her hair.

Very nice work, and so nicely balanced.

Another beautiful work, the hair of the woman feels like there are many strands because of the white ink or white pen that you used and small dark lines at the top of her head.

The feeling I get over all is that the man is dying or dead and the woman is holding on to his lifeless body hopelessly and her eyes give the feeling of being red because she has been crying for hours over the loss, very powerful feeling convoyed through her red tired eyes.

The only thing I would have loved to seen is that the man's back (where the two blue drops of paint / watercolor are) would disappear. Showing that his "soul" or life is fading away.

In all, amazing piece.

From the woman's sad expression to the contrast between her and the almost colourless man, this is a beautiful piece!
In the photograph you used for inspiration, it looks as though the woman is comforting the man, but your version of this pose brings back memories of an unfaithful lover I once had.
In my imagination, the woman in your artwork is trying to grasp this ghost of a man, holding him to her body in a sign of ownership, wrapping her colours around him, inviting him into her heart/life/soul. But despite her efforts, she knows he will never really be hers, hence the intense sadness in her eyes.
I love your work!
