I'm using 3D Studio Max for 3D modeling and animations. Dunno what's best for beginners, but Blender is really good free software. There is lots of free tutorials for it online, but I have to warn you that all 3D softwares requires more effort to learn than 2D for example. It's not difficult, but there's lots to take in. So you need to really work to learn it all.
