I got enraptured when i saw your sword work! Do you practice with them? Besides creating art with them, what do you use them for? I'm a writer of fantasy, and besides writing about sword fighting, I've often wondered about using them now-a-days. Not for fighting, of course, but for reference and experience. Anyway, beautiful work!!!

Hi, and thank you so much for your comments and questions. I do indeed use them in real life. I have been involved with practicing sword-play for nearly 20 years, and everything I make must be functional as well as artistic. If it doesn't function as it's intended to, then it's just art, and not a weapon ... and I make weapons.

Your work is amazing breathtaking stunning, this is the first time I've seen a metal pro.
Can you give a brief intro about this art or hobby, just to keep me not asking silly questions to pros

LOL. Thanks for wanting to know a little bit about this "mysterious" craft. Firstly, there are two methods of creating a blade. You can either forge it into shape, which is heating the steel bar in a forge and hammering it while it's soft, or you can do a method called stock removal, which is taking a piece of flat steel and cutting into shape. Since there is always some amount of cutting/grinding needed when forging, I chose to create my pieces using the stock removal method. It's faster, more acurate and the steel remains free of inclusions that are added when you forge.

If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know.

Ray.

interesting, Am really glad that this "mysterious" crafting is still alive, dont take me wrong but, this talent is ancient and rare, but how does someone start of? like me am kinda young, I dont even think a country will allow a forge into a house making weapons? any small projects for practising?
thanks for staying up with me!! really want to get into craftsmen ship

I've looked through your gallery, and you have a wonderful talent. If you really are only 13, then I'm impressed with your eye for detail. I believe that the secret to producing the most striking art of any kind is detail, and you certainly seem to understand that. When it comes to making knives, detail is also important, but the steps are simple enough, though they are similar to your drawings as well. Firstly, you need to begin with a purpose for your knife, because tat purpose will ultimately dictate it's final design. Once you know what you want your knife to do, or rather how you want it to function, you can set about designing it. After you have a design, it's down to crafting ... so that's it really - the steps to making knives, swords or any other blade.

I'd love to receive some updates from you. You know, you can prototype your blades in timber before you make them in steel, to avoid costly, frustrating mistakes. Just something to consider.

I just posted the first of my knife designs, the Lethe. Personally, I think the handle my be a little disproportionate, but if you decide to make it, please try to make it in whatever way you can to make all its functions work right and still keep it balanced and comfortable. For some reason, I keep imagining the rings on it to be made of something like solid plastic! XD I plan to post another sword design, the Egyptian-based one, sometime in the next hour or so, so why not give me a watch so you can keep up? I will probably be doing more re-drawings in the near future, so it would be worth it to watch me anyway!

Your Sword of Ra is a classic design of the ancient Assyrain swords called a Sapara.

Shipping to Cal would be around the $80.00 mark.

As soon as I saw your work, made me think of the Klingon blades from Star Trek.
The Batleth has always intrigued me, have you ever considered shaping anything like it?

I have actually made a Bat'leth for a friend who is a Star Trek fan. It hangs on his wall with a plaque describing the weapon for those who visit his place, who do not know it's signifigance.

Well, I had a need, and spent 20 years figuring it all out ... and I've only just begun!

What I meant by just begun was that I have so much more to learn, even after 20 years, that it is like I have only just begun.

I have never been given a design I could not make ...

Perhaps I should inquire about my "House sword"
[link]
I would add a drawing if I knew how.I do want it a combat weapon and entirely too heavy as well.
If we come to an agreement it would be starting out in the fall possibly in payments.

I always wondered how much cost would go into making a custom Katana with a simple wood stained wood hilt and scabbard. The blade would be a bit thicker and the edge would be beveled instead of thin/sharp and of course it would have the rope work just above the edge. Its not super fancy but its non standard. And then I have an idea of one like that minus the rope work with a solid light blue blade(since I doubt anyone could fit light saber stuff in it and make it work with a katana style blade lulz). Sorry if I am bothering you, you do great work prob more than I could ever afford, just thinking out loud.

BLOODSTORME In reply to ZippyDSMlee [2012-06-22 14:09:01 +0000 UTC]

Thinking out load? Glad you thought my way actually.

A simple Katana wouldn't be too difficult, so if you have a design, post it through and we'll see about a price for you.

Ray.

This has the scabbard design in it,
[link]

Heres another picture

[link]

See how its flatly beveled its not smooth but rather has I guess you could say alot of straight lines or a kinda boxy look, its rather frustrating this sword is nearly perfect but it was a freaking window in it LOL, its also not gold/yellow enough I got a thing for the golden brown look like this.
[link]

Use to have one it was awesome but the bamboo effect annoyed it, IE it was near perfect but not quite like my OC sword.

As for the blade its pretty self explanatory IE thicker than normal so you can have a thick beveled edge instead of a sharp one , the rope flame thing is the wavey line just beyond the edge
[link]

Also what would be the cost of just taking a blade thats already made if thats easier and giving it a ceramic light blue look with some highly reflective or black light paint or both, LOL

Thanks for your time.
